Keep your line breaks on Instagram

Paste your caption or bio, pick what goes on each blank line, and copy the result. Lines that only look empty get a spacer, so they are no longer empty. Nothing is sent anywhere: the text is handled in this page.

How it works

  1. 1Paste your text

Type or paste a caption or bio. Windows and Mac line endings are both read, and lines that hold only spaces are treated as blank.

  2. 2Choose the spacer

Invisible (the Braille blank, U+2800), a full stop, a middle dot, or none. Then set how many blank lines in a row to allow.

  3. 3Check the preview

The preview shows the layout the copied text will have. Turn on the markers to see which lines carry a spacer.

  4. 4Copy and test

Paste into Instagram and read the preview before you post. How blank lines are kept depends on where you paste, so one test is worth it.

What the tool changes

It works line by line. A line with nothing on it, or only spaces, tabs or invisible characters, counts as blank. Every other line is left exactly as you typed it, apart from the options below.

  • Blank lines get the spacer you chose, so they hold one character instead of nothing.
  • Spaces and tabs at the end of a line are removed, if you leave that option on.
  • Runs of blank lines are cut to one or two, or left as typed.
  • Blank lines at the very start and end are dropped, so the post doesn’t begin with a gap.
  • Optionally, each sentence goes on its own line or in its own paragraph. It splits after a full stop, so “Dr. Lee” would be cut in two: read the preview.

Run it twice and you get the same text back. A line that already holds the spacer is read as blank, so nothing piles up.

Why an empty line can vanish

Meta doesn’t document how Instagram treats blank lines in captions and bios, so there is no rule to quote here. What people report is that text pasted from a notes app, a scheduler or a spreadsheet sometimes arrives with its gaps closed up. The usual workaround is the one this tool applies: give the empty line one character that doesn’t look like anything.

The invisible option is U+2800, the Unicode “Braille pattern blank”. It is a symbol, not a whitespace character, which is why a trimmer that strips spaces leaves it alone. Instagram hasn’t said it supports this, so treat it as a workaround. It may stop working if Instagram changes how it handles text, so test it on any post that matters.

Which spacer to pick

SpacerWhat people seeChoose it when
Invisible (U+2800)Nothing, just a gapYou want clean paragraphs and your first test kept the gap
Full stopA small dot on its own lineThe invisible one gets stripped where you paste
Middle dotA small centred dotYou want a visible divider that is quieter than a full stop
Keep lines emptyWhatever the app does with an empty lineYou only want the spaces and extra blank lines tidied

Tip: Each spacer is a character. Twelve blank lines add twelve, and Instagram’s limit may count them, so leave a little room if your caption is close to its limit. The character counter shows your total.

Test it once before a big post

  1. Copy the result and paste it into the caption box on the share screen, or into your bio.
  2. Read what the app shows, not what you pasted. Are the gaps still there?
  3. If a gap has closed, go back and try the full stop. If a stray dot shows where you wanted nothing, go back to the invisible one.
  4. Check the opening lines too. Those are what people see before they tap “more”.

One caveat on accessibility: a screen reader may announce a character it can’t show. A few spacers are fine, but a caption made of dozens of them is worse to listen to, so use blank lines where they help the reading.

Questions people ask

Does Instagram remove blank lines from captions?

Meta doesn’t document this, so we can’t give you a rule. Some people find blank lines disappear when they paste text from another app. This tool puts a character on each blank line so there is something to keep, and you can see the effect in the app before you post.

Is the invisible character a real character?

Yes. U+2800 is the Braille pattern blank, an ordinary Unicode character that happens to draw nothing. It counts as one character in this tool. Whether Instagram counts it the same toward its limit is not documented, so allow a little room.

Will it work in my bio as well as in captions?

Try it. Bios are short, so the preview and one test in the app tell you quickly. The character counter shows the length, since a spacer on each blank line uses part of your bio’s allowance.

Why offer a full stop instead of an invisible spacer?

A visible dot survives anywhere that keeps text, so it is the fallback when invisible characters are stripped. You can use the middle dot if you want something quieter.

Does my text leave my device?

No. The fixing happens in this page with plain code, and there is no upload and no account. Closing the tab clears the box.
