Slang meaning
What does GG mean?
GG stands for “good game.” Players type it when an online match ends, win or lose, like a handshake after a tennis final. Outside games it has come to mean “it's over,” as in “forgot my charger on a 9-hour flight, gg.” With “ez” after it, it stops being polite at all.

“Good game”: a sporting sign-off at the end of a match, and in everyday chat a shrug that means “it's over.”
What GG can mean
1. Good game, said at the end
The original meaning is sportsmanship. When a match finishes, players on both sides type gg to say it was a fair contest. Typed by the losing side before the finish, it's also a surrender: in StarCraft, typing gg is how a player resigns, and in professional matches the referee treats it as a forfeit on the spot. Chess sites, fighting games and team shooters all share the habit.
2. It's over, we're doomed
Outside games, gg announces that something is lost: “three exams tomorrow and I haven't opened a book, gg.” It works like a dramatic sigh, and the bigger the disaster, the funnier it reads. In a match, a teammate typing gg halfway through means the same thing with more bitterness: the game isn't over yet, but they've decided it is.
3. Well done, for any contest
Friends also use gg as quick congratulations for anything that felt like a competition: passing a driving test, winning a pub quiz, finally getting a toddler to sleep. A “gg” under a post about a new job is praise, close to “well played,” and it comes mostly from friends who game.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Gaming clips and esports posts
Under clips of close finishes and last-second saves, “gg” and “ggs” fill the comments. Esports teams and gaming clubs often post the final score with “GG” in the caption, win or lose, which is the gracious version. Under a clip of a one-sided win, “gg ez” in the comments is mockery.
Group chats and Notes
Here gg is mostly the “it's over” sense: a missed train, a phone on 2% with no charger, a cake that sank in the oven. A one-word “gg” as an Instagram Note tells friends the day has gone wrong without saying how, which usually draws a few “what happened” replies.
Replies to good news
Under a post about exam results, a promotion or a finished marathon, “gg” or “gg wp” is congratulations. Relatives who don't game may not recognise it, so it lands best with people who already speak the language.
Facebook groups for clubs and leagues
In groups for chess clubs, five-a-side leagues, quiz nights and local tournaments, “gg everyone” after an event is the standard friendly sign-off. It does the job of the handshake line at the end of a junior football match.

How to reply to GG
Where it comes from
GG goes back to multiplayer games of the mid-to-late 1990s, when people first played each other over local networks and early online servers. StarCraft, released in 1998, is widely credited with making it standard, and its competitive scene turned a typed gg into the formal way to concede. As online games grew, so did its sarcastic side.
Questions people ask
What does “gg ez” mean, and why is it rude?
It means “good game, easy,” and it's a taunt: the winner is saying the other side was no challenge. Most players see it as bad manners. Blizzard went as far as building a filter into Overwatch that swaps “gg ez” in match chat for a random line, many of them self-mocking, so the insult never arrives as typed.
What do gl hf, gg wp and gg no re mean?
They're the rest of the same etiquette. Gl hf (“good luck, have fun”) opens a match, and gg wp (“good game, well played”) closes it. Gg no re means “good game, no rematch,” so the player is done for now. Ggs is the plural, used after a series of games.
Is it bad manners to type gg before a match is over?
It depends on the game. In one-on-one strategy games, gg before the end is the normal way to resign, and quitting without it can look rude. In team games, an early gg from a teammate tells everyone they've given up, which most players find more annoying than losing.
Does GG mean anything outside gaming?
Yes. TV fans use GG for Gossip Girl and Gilmore Girls, so a “GG rewatch” on a fan page is about the show, not a match. Among friends it can also mean well done, as in “passed my test today” “gg.” The rest of the message usually makes it obvious.
