Slang meaning
What does catfish mean online?
A catfish is someone who pretends to be a different person online, using fake photos and a made-up story, usually to build a relationship. To “catfish” someone is to do that to them.
Updated 6 October 2026
A catfish is a person who invents a fake online identity to deceive someone, most often in a romantic situation.
What catfish can mean
1. A person with a fake identity
The main sense. A catfish uses someone else’s photos, or heavily edited ones, and a false name and life story. The deception can be about age, appearance, job or gender. Some do it from loneliness; others do it to get money or gifts, which is closer to a scam.
2. To catfish, and to be catfished
As a verb it describes the act (“he catfished her for a year”). Being “catfished” means discovering the person you were talking to isn’t who they said. Some people also use it loosely for a photo that looks far better than the real thing, though that is a weaker use.
3. The animal
A catfish is also a type of fish with whisker-like feelers. The slang does not refer to the fish directly, which is why it can be confusing to someone who has only seen it in a headline.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram DMs and message requests
The usual setting: someone with a few polished photos follows you, then messages warmly and moves fast. People compare notes in Stories and say “I think I got catfished.” Instagram profiles are easy to fake, so a young account with few posts is worth a second look.
Facebook Marketplace and dating groups
Fake profiles also appear in groups and Marketplace chats, often claiming to be abroad or in the army and asking for money. The word is also used there for fake sellers, though “scammer” is the usual term.
Comments on viral videos
When a creator’s partner or a mystery person looks too good to be true, commenters write “catfish?” or “sounds like a catfish.” Treat these as guesses, not facts.

How to reply to catfish
Where it comes from
The slang took off after the 2010 documentary Catfish, in which a man discovers that the woman he has been talking to online is not who she said. An MTV series, Catfish: The TV Show, followed in 2012 and made the word everyday English.
Questions people ask
How can I tell if someone is a catfish?
Common signs are refusing to video call or meet, photos that look too professional, a very new account with few posts or friends, a story that keeps changing, and an early request for money. One sign alone proves nothing, but several together are a good reason to be careful.
What should I do if I think I’m being catfished?
Stop sending money or personal details, take screenshots, and report the account to Instagram or Facebook using the report option on the profile or message. If money has been taken, contact your bank and local police or fraud reporting service.
Is a catfish the same as a scammer?
Not always. A catfish hides who they are, and the motive may be loneliness or curiosity. A romance scammer builds a fake identity in order to get money. Plenty of scams start as a catfish, so treat any money request as a red flag.
Can I be accused of catfishing for using filters?
Normally no. Catfishing needs deliberate deception about who you are. A filtered selfie is not the same as using another person’s photos or a false name, though large changes can still cause disappointment when you meet.
