Fam is short for family: a friendly word for close friends, used as a greeting or a warm way to address someone.
What fam can mean
1. Close friends and people you trust
A term of warmth between friends, not between relatives. Wiktionary places it mainly in African-American Vernacular English, Multicultural London English and internet slang. “You good, fam?” is a friendly check-in.
2. A community as a whole
Creators and small brands address everyone who follows them as fam, to say “you’re part of this.” “Welcome to the fam” means welcome to the group.
3. Actual family
Sometimes it is just family, as in “family and friends”, and in the travel trade it is short for “familiarisation”, as in a fam trip for agents. The sense usually shows in context.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram comments
Fans and followers use it to address a creator or each other in a friendly way. “Love this, fam” is a compliment, and it signals you see yourself as part of the same group.
Captions and Stories
Creators open with “hey fam” on a post or a Story, or sign off with a thank-you. It addresses an audience as a community rather than as customers.
DMs
Between friends it is a casual way to say hello or reassure someone: “it’s all good, fam.” With someone you hardly know it can feel overfamiliar.

How to reply to fam
Where it comes from
Fam is a clipping, a shortened form of “family.” Wiktionary records the friendly-address sense as one used between friends rather than relatives.
Questions people ask
Does fam mean someone is actually related to you?
Not usually. In slang it is a warm word for a friend or a close group. If a relative is meant, people tend to say “family” or give the relationship.
How is fam different from bro or bestie?
“Bro” is casual and usually male-to-male. “Bestie” points at one close friend. “Fam” is warmer and flexible: it works for one person or a whole group, any gender.
Is it fine for a business to call customers fam?
Some do and it can feel friendly. It can also feel presumptuous to someone who has bought once. If your brand’s voice is already casual, it fits, and if not, “friends” or “everyone” is safer.
Is there a spelling difference, like “fams” or “famalam”?
“Fams” is the plural. “Famalam” is a jokier, extended form that has been used in British slang. All of them point to the same idea of family or friends.
