Updated 6 October 2026
Bruh is a flat reaction to something silly or disappointing, and a casual way to address a friend, like “bro.”
What bruh can mean
1. A deadpan reaction
The most common sense. Someone drops a plate, loses a game or reads a terrible take, and the response is “bruh.” The word carries no explanation, which is why it works: it says “I have no words.” “Bruh moment” names a situation like that.
2. Addressing a friend
Used like “bro” or “mate”: “bruh, you’re not serious.” It is an informal, friendly address, often to a male friend, though people of any gender use it. Tone decides whether it is warm or exasperated.
3. Disappointed or annoyed
Said with a full stop and no emoji, “bruh.” can come across as quietly cross, especially in reply to something careless. Between close friends it is the usual way to say “really?”
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram comments
Under fail videos and clumsy moments, a bare “bruh” is the standard reaction, often with 😭 or 💀. Longer versions like “bruhhh” show more disbelief, and capitals add volume.
Story replies and DMs
Friends send it when a Story shows something silly or when a plan falls through. It can also be a way to show shock at news, so the reply that follows tells you whether it was good or bad.
Facebook posts and groups
Less common than on Instagram, but younger users write it under news or odd Marketplace listings. Older users may be puzzled and read it as an insult, which it usually isn’t.

How to reply to bruh
Where it comes from
Bruh is a respelling of “bro,” itself short for “brother,” which reflects how the word is drawled. The “bruh” spelling spread through online video and social media. Its roots are in African American Vernacular English, and the exact first use is not documented.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between bruh and bro?
They overlap. “Bro” is mainly an address for a friend, while “bruh” is more often a standalone reaction as well as an address. “Bruh” is also more deadpan, since the extra drawl signals disbelief.
What is a “bruh moment”?
A moment so silly or disappointing that “bruh” is the only reaction: dropping a drink, a failed plan, a bad take. People post it as a caption or a hashtag under clumsy clips.
Is bruh rude?
Not usually. It can sound dismissive from a stranger, or when used flatly with a full stop, but between friends it is normal and often affectionate.
Can a brand reply with “bruh”?
Only for a casual, jokey account with a young audience and a funny moment. For complaints or customer service, a plain “sorry about that” is safer, because “bruh” can sound like you are brushing off the customer.
