Slang meaning
What does cuz mean?
“Cuz” usually just means “because”, typed the way people say it fast. It can also be short for “cousin”, or used as a friendly name for a mate. Context makes it obvious.
Updated 6 October 2026
Cuz is a casual short form of “because”, and is also short for cousin or a friendly way to address someone.
What cuz can mean
1. Because
By far the most common sense in comments and DMs. “Can’t come tonight cuz I’m working” is the same as writing “because.” It is also written “cus”, “coz” or “cos”, and “cause” is the other common clipped form.
2. Cousin
In family chats and captions, “cuz” stands for a cousin: “out with my cuz today.” Here it is a noun, so it follows words such as “my” or “the”.
3. Friend or mate
Some speakers use “cuz” as a warm way to address a friend, close to “mate” or “bro”, whether or not the person is a relative: “thanks cuz.” It shows closeness more than family ties.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and group chats
Written as a conjunction mid-sentence: “running late cuz the bus was cancelled.” It reads as chatty and quick, and is not used in formal messages.
Instagram captions and comments
Two sets of uses. “Cuz” as because appears in lowercase inside a caption. “Cuz” as cousin turns up in tagged family photos, usually with a heart or a joke.
Facebook family threads
Frequently means cousin, since Facebook is where extended relatives gather. “Happy birthday cuz” is a very common comment.

How to reply to cuz
Where it comes from
Cuz as “because” is a spelling of a spoken clipped form of “because”. As “cousin”, it is likewise an informal shortening of that word. Neither needed social media to appear, but texting and comments made the short spellings common.
Questions people ask
How do I know which meaning of cuz someone intends?
Look at the grammar. If it joins two parts of a sentence (“I’m tired cuz I worked late”) it means because. If it follows “my” or “the”, or is used as a name, it means cousin or mate.
Is “cuz” the same as “cause”?
In use, yes: both are clipped forms of “because” used when speaking or texting. Spelling varies, and there is no official form, so cuz, cus, coz and ‘cause all appear.
Is “cuz” correct in a business message?
Avoid it in formal customer messages and write “because”. In a casual brand voice, “cuz” sits fine in a caption, but a support reply looks more careful with the full word.
Is it rude to call someone cuz if they are not my cousin?
Usually not, if you already know the person well. Among strangers it can feel overly familiar, so use someone’s name unless they started it.
