What does FBF mean?
FBF stands for Flashback Friday. People add it to a photo from the past on a Friday, as in “fbf to the summer we got lost in Lisbon.”
Updated 6 October 2026
FBF means Flashback Friday: a caption or hashtag for posting an old photo or memory on a Friday.
What FBF can mean
1. Flashback Friday
A themed way to share something old. The picture can be from last year or 15 years ago, and the caption usually says what it is: a holiday, a school photo, an earlier version of a business. The Friday is the whole rule.
2. A caption for any old memory
In practice the tag is looser than its name. People put it on Stories, reposted memories and old business photos, and not only on photos taken years ago. If you see FBF on a Friday post, read it as “this is from the past.”
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Captions and hashtags
Usually written “#fbf” at the end of a caption or as “fbf” at the start. The photo is the point: the caption just names the memory, with a date or a place when it helps.
Stories
A throwback Story with the text “fbf” over it is common, especially on a Friday morning when people have time to scroll their camera roll.
Business posts
Brands use it for old product photos, first-shop pictures and early logos. It works because customers like seeing how a small business began, and it takes little effort to prepare.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between FBF and TBT?
TBT means Throwback Thursday and FBF means Flashback Friday. Both caption old photos, one on Thursday and one on Friday. People mix the two and nobody checks the day.
Do I have to post on a Friday for FBF?
Nobody enforces it. Posting on a Friday fits the name, but an FBF caption on a Saturday will not get questioned. The hashtag is a custom, not a rule.
Does the hashtag help reach on Instagram?
Treat it as a caption style rather than a growth trick. Its main value is telling people why you are posting an old photo, and there is no solid evidence that the tag itself boosts reach.
Is the photo supposed to be a long time ago?
It only has to be in the past. Last month works, and so does last decade. Posts with a clear before-and-after tend to get the best reactions.
