Slang meaning
What does bc mean?
In texts and comments, bc means “because.” It does the same job as the full word, just faster: “can't come tonight bc of work.” Written in capitals after a number or a place, BC is something else, usually a date (500 BC) or the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Short for “because”: people type bc to give a reason fast, as in “late bc traffic.”
What bc can mean
1. Because
The texting meaning, and the one you'll meet most on social media. bc links something to its reason: “skipping the gym bc my legs are dead,” “following bc of the dog videos.” It covers every use of “because,” including the clipped internet style that drops the “of” and keeps one word: “bc reasons,” “bc rain.” The older b/c, with a slash, means the same thing.
2. BC in dates
In history posts, museum captions and travel content, BC means “before Christ,” the traditional label for the years before year 1 of the calendar most of the world uses. It goes after the number, as in 3000 BC, and those years count down, so 3000 BC is older than 2000 BC. Many writers now use BCE, “before the common era,” for the same years.
3. British Columbia and birth control
After a town name, BC is British Columbia, the Canadian province: “pickup in Kelowna, BC.” You'll see it in Marketplace listings and local groups across the province. In health and wellness posts, “bc” can also mean birth control, as in “my bc made my skin worse.” The topic of the post usually gives it away.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and group chats
This is where bc does most of its work: the quick reasons people give for being late, leaving early or not replying. It's typed in lower case, mid-sentence, and it carries no mood of its own, so take the tone from the rest of the message.
Comments and captions
Commenters use it to explain a reaction: “saving this bc I always overcook pasta,” “crying bc this is my cat.” Captions love the one-line shrug, “new hair bc why not,” where the reason is that there isn't one.
Facebook groups and Marketplace
Both meanings meet here. A seller writes “selling bc we're moving” in one listing and “pickup in Victoria BC” in the next. Capitals after a place name mean the province; lower case in the middle of a sentence means “because.”

How to reply to bc
Where it comes from
Spoken English has long clipped “because” to ’cause, and casual writing spells it cos or cuz. b/c and bc are the written shortcuts; bc, without the slash, is the one people type in chats. In January 2014 the American Dialect Society named “because” its Word of the Year for 2013, for its new internet use before a noun or adjective, as in “because science.”
Questions people ask
Is it bc or b/c?
Both mean “because.” b/c with a slash is the older note-taking style and still turns up in emails and study notes. Plain bc is the usual form in chats, comments and captions. Neither is wrong; in a text the slash just looks a little formal.
What does “bc why not” mean?
It's a shrug in words: I did it because I felt like it, no excuse needed. You'll see it under spontaneous purchases, new hair colours and last-minute trips. It's cheerful rather than defensive, and the right reply is usually to cheer them on.
How is bc different from cuz?
They mean the same thing. cuz (also cus or cos) copies how “because” sounds when it's said quickly, so it reads chattier. Watch for its second meaning: “my cuz” is a cousin, not a reason.
How can I tell if BC is a date?
Look for a number in front of it. “The temple dates to 400 BC” is a date. A sentence where bc is followed by a reason means “because.” And BC after a town, as in “Kamloops, BC,” is the province.
