Slang meaning
What does ts mean?
ts started as a fast way to type “this shit,” and for a lot of younger people it now just means “this.” It opens short reactions like “ts pmo” (this pisses me off) and “ts tuff” (this is cool). Because of the swear behind it, keep it to friends, even when the writer meant nothing crude.
Updated 6 October 2026
Slang for “this,” with a swear behind it: ts pmo means this annoys me, and ts tuff means this is cool.
What ts can mean
1. This, with a swear in the background
The current meaning. ts takes the place of “this” at the start of a reaction: “ts so good,” “who made ts,” “ts not it.” Spelled out it is “this shit,” and slang guides give that as the meaning, but many teenagers use it as a two-letter “this” without thinking of the swear. An adult reading it should assume the cruder version is never far away.
2. Too bad, deal with it
An older use with a colder tone. Sent alone in reply to a complaint, “ts” can mean “tough shit”: too bad, your problem. It long predates the TikTok meaning and it isn't friendly. If someone moans about missing the bus and gets a single “ts” back, this is the likely reading.
3. TS outside slang
In capitals and in their own settings, the letters do plenty of ordinary jobs. To programmers, .ts is a TypeScript file. In weather updates, TS is a tropical storm. In government and defence work, TS means top secret, as in a TS clearance. None of these stay confused with “ts pmo” for long.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comments under Reels and posts
ts usually opens a quick verdict on the post itself: “ts so hard,” “ts not real 😭,” “need ts.” Most are compliments or jokes, and they tend to come from teenage and young-adult accounts. Under a shop's post, “need ts” means someone wants to buy the thing.
Acronym chains in DMs and Notes
Friends string it together with other short forms: “icl ts pmo” (honestly, this annoys me), “ts lowkey fire,” “ts so real.” In an Instagram Note it works as a mood about whatever “this” is that day: a test, a late train, a group project nobody else is doing.
On-screen text and memes
Meme pages put ts in the text over a video, “ts me every monday,” and leave the clip to show what “this” is. Read ts as “this” and the caption makes sense; the swear is implied rather than said.

How to reply to ts
Where it comes from
As a written abbreviation, ts spread in late 2024 and 2025, when TikTok users chained it with other short forms such as pmo, icl and sybau. For many young people it has since softened from the swear into plain “this.” The “tough shit” meaning is much older and unrelated.
Questions people ask
Is ts a swear word?
In its full form, yes: the S is “shit.” Plenty of teenagers write ts with no more in mind than “this,” so a kid's “ts fire” may not feel crude to them. It still doesn't belong in homework, a work chat or a reply to a customer, where plain “this” costs only two more letters.
What does “ts tuff” mean?
“This is tough,” where tuff means impressive or cool, not difficult. Under a photo of a car, an outfit or a last-minute goal, “ts tuff” is a compliment. “ts hard” and “ts fire” are the same kind of praise.
How is ts different from pmo?
They do different jobs. ts is the thing being talked about, “this,” and pmo is the effect it has, “pisses me off.” Together, “ts pmo” is one complaint. On its own, ts leads into praise just as easily: “ts so good.”
What should a shop do with a ts comment?
Read the rest of it. “need ts” and “ts fire” are good news and deserve a thank-you. “ts broke after one wash” is a complaint in slang, and it needs the same answer as a polite one: an apology and an offer to fix it in DMs. Don't copy the slang back.
