Tips for using these ideas
Write the options as carefully as the question. Use all four slots when the honest answer isn’t yes or no, and add a middle option such as “only in winter” or “depends”, so nobody skips a poll they can’t answer truthfully.
Put the poll on a photo of the thing being decided, such as the three book spines or the chair before it’s re-covered. A poll on a plain background asks people to imagine; a photo lets them judge.
Compare votes with how many people saw that frame, not with your follower count. If 90 of 400 viewers voted, the question landed; if 9 did, the options were unclear or the question gave people no reason to care.
On a professional account, Insights already shows where your followers are and their age ranges, so don’t spend polls on those. Ask what Insights can’t tell you: skill level, what people save, what they would buy.
On a business account, look at who picked the unhappy option. Someone who voted “still waiting” on a delivery poll is a customer with a problem, and a short personal message to them is service, not spam.
Leave out polls that rank people’s looks, weight or worth, and questions about money or health that people won’t want seen. Voters know you can see each vote, and they skip anything that feels exposing.
Questions people ask
How do I make a poll on Instagram?
For a Story, add a photo, video or background, tap the sticker icon and choose Poll. Type your question, replace the default answers with your own (up to four), place the sticker and share. Group chats in your DMs have their own poll option, and creators can post polls in a broadcast channel.
Are Instagram polls anonymous?
Not to the person who posted them. Swipe up on your own Story and the viewer list shows how each person voted. Everyone else sees only the percentages, and only after they’ve voted.
Can I change a poll after posting it?
No. A Story can’t be edited once it’s up, so a typo in an option stays. You can delete it and post a corrected one, but the votes already cast are lost, so read the options once more before you share.
What’s the difference between a poll and a quiz on Instagram?
A poll has no right answer: it counts opinions. The Quiz sticker has one correct option that you mark, and people see straight away whether they got it right. For a guessing game, a poll keeps the answer back until your next frame, which gives viewers a reason to tap forward.
Can I add a poll to an Instagram post?
Feed photo and carousel posts don’t have a poll sticker. Ask in the caption with lettered options, “A, B or C? Answer in the comments”, and count the replies, or run the same question as a Story poll and mention it in the caption.
How long does an Instagram Story poll stay open?
As long as the Story is up: 24 hours, unless you delete it sooner. Note the result before it disappears, or add the Story to a highlight so the question stays on your profile.
