What does link in bio mean?

“Link in bio” is what creators write when they want you to visit the web address shown on their Instagram profile. It is also the name for the page or link that sits there. Here is what the phrase means, and what Instagram has said about links in a bio.

Updated 6 October 2026

A phrase and a habit: posts and Stories say “link in bio” to send people to the web address on the poster’s Instagram profile, where visitors can tap it.

What the phrase points to

When a caption, Reel or Story says “link in bio”, it is sending you to the profile of the account, where a web address sits near the bio text. Whatever the owner put there is the destination: a shop, a newsletter sign-up, a booking page, or a page that holds several links at once.

Because one address often has to carry many offers, a lot of people put a small page of links there instead of a single URL. That page is usually what people mean by “a link in bio tool”. DMFast has one too, built into the same account as its other tools, but any page that opens in a browser can serve as a link in bio.

Links inside the bio text

The bio text itself can also hold links, with limits. In a news post dated 21 March 2018, Instagram announced hashtag and profile links in bio. Typing a # or an @ in the bio turns what you pick into a live link to that hashtag page or to another profile. You add them through Edit Profile, in the bio section, where a list of suggested hashtags and accounts appears as you type.

The same post says that when you mention someone else’s profile this way, they are notified and can choose to remove the link to their profile. Their name stays in your bio, but it is no longer clickable. So an @mention in your bio is not entirely under your control.

That 2018 post is about hashtag and profile links only. It does not cover the address field for websites. Instagram’s Help Center article “Add a website to your Instagram profile” does: it says you can add up to 5 websites, that anyone, on or off Instagram, can see them, and that in the app you add them under Edit profile, then Links, then Add external link. It lists this for the iPhone and Android apps, not for computers. These rules have changed before, so open Edit Profile in your own app to see what your account offers today.

Using it well

  • Say what the link is for: “link in bio for the price list” beats a bare “link in bio”.
  • Keep the destination matching the post. Someone who tapped through from a recipe Reel should land on the recipe, not on a general home page.
  • Change the link when the offer changes, and remove it when the offer ends.
  • Check the link on a phone, because that is where most people will open it from.

Tip: If a post would otherwise say “link in bio”, consider asking people to comment a word instead. With DMFast the comment can trigger a message, though the first message to a commenter is plain text and the link follows once they reply.

An example

A candle maker posts a Reel of a new scent and writes “link in bio for the pre-order”. Visitors open her profile, tap the address under her name and arrive at a pre-order page, not her whole shop.

Questions people ask

What does “link in bio” mean?

It means the web address on the poster’s Instagram profile. Posts say it because the profile is where the address sits, so the viewer needs to go to the profile and tap it.

Can I put a link in an Instagram bio?

Yes. Instagram’s Help Center says you can add up to 5 websites to your profile, in the app under Edit profile, then Links. Its 2018 announcement also describes live hashtag and profile links typed into the bio text. Rules change, so check Edit Profile in your own app.

Does a profile mention in a bio notify the other person?

Yes. Instagram’s March 2018 post says the person you mention is notified and can remove the link to their profile, after which their name stays in your bio without a link.

Is a link in bio the same as a link page?

No. The link in bio is whatever address is set on the profile. A link page is one possible destination: a single web page that lists several links, so one address can serve many offers.

Can DMFast send a link instead of saying link in bio?

Yes, on Instagram professional accounts. Someone comments your keyword, DMFast replies and asks them to reply, and the link follows in the next message. The first message to a commenter has to be plain text.
