What is an Instagram-scoped ID (IGSID)?

An Instagram-scoped ID, or IGSID, is the number Meta’s Instagram API uses for a person who sends a DM to a professional account. Their messages reach the connected app labelled with it, and the app answers by sending to that ID. It isn’t the person’s username, and you won’t find it anywhere on their profile.

An IGSID is the ID Meta’s Instagram API gives someone who messages a professional account. Apps receive their DMs, reply and look up their profile with it.

Automation and Meta's API

How IGSIDs move through an Instagram inbox

When someone messages a professional account, Meta sends a webhook notification to the app connected to it. The notification carries the sender’s IGSID and their message, along with the ID of the account that received it, which Meta’s documentation writes as IG_ID. To answer, the app sends a POST request to /<IG_ID>/messages with the IGSID as the recipient.

IDWho or what it identifiesWhat apps use it for
IGSIDThe person messaging the accountReading and answering their DMs, looking up their profile
IG_IDThe professional account itselfThe path of API calls, such as /<IG_ID>/messages
Comment IDA single commentSending the one private reply that comment allows
UsernameThe person’s public handleShowing who someone is; people can change it
PSIDA person in one Facebook Page’s Messenger chatsThe Messenger equivalent, with its own numbers

A comment-to-DM flow uses two of these in turn. The first DM is a private reply addressed to the comment ID. When the person writes back, their reply arrives with an IGSID, and every later message in the conversation goes to that ID.

What an IGSID can look up

Given an IGSID, an app can ask Meta for that person’s profile. The fields on offer are name, username, profile_pic, follower_count, is_verified_user, is_user_follow_business and is_business_follow_user. The last two say whether they follow the business and whether the business follows them.

  • The person has to reach out first, by sending a message, tapping an ice breaker or choosing from the persistent menu. Until then, Meta answers the lookup with an error saying user consent is required.
  • name and profile_pic come back empty for people who haven’t set them, so a greeting needs a fallback such as “Hi there”.
  • The profile_pic link stops working after a few days. Save the image itself if you need it later, not the link.
  • If the person has blocked the business, none of their details can be read.

Storing IGSIDs without surprises

  • Make the IGSID, not the username, the key for a contact. Handles change; the ID stays put, so chat history and a person’s place in a flow survive a rename.
  • Keep it next to the account that received the message. Meta’s documentation describes the IGSID in the context of messages to a particular professional account, so a business running two accounts should keep their contact lists apart rather than merging on the ID.
  • Store it as a string. Meta sends IDs as text, and converting a long ID to a number can quietly alter its final digits in spreadsheets and in languages such as JavaScript.
  • Remember the window. An IGSID tells an app who to message, not when: replies have to go out within 24 hours of the person’s last message, each with no more than 1,000 bytes of UTF-8 text.

An example

A customer DMs a skincare shop’s Instagram account about refill pouches. The message arrives with their IGSID; the shop’s tool files the chat under that ID, looks up their name for the greeting and replies to the same IGSID.

Questions people ask

Is an IGSID the same as an Instagram user ID?

No. It’s the ID Meta’s messaging API uses for someone who messages a professional account. It isn’t their username, it doesn’t appear on their profile, and the professional account’s own ID, IG_ID, is a different number again.

How do I find someone’s IGSID?

Only through Meta’s API, once the person contacts the account: their DMs arrive carrying it. There’s no way to look one up for someone who has never interacted with the account, which is one reason no official tool can message people who didn’t write first.

Does an IGSID change when someone changes their username?

No. A new handle or profile photo leaves the IGSID as it was, which is exactly why it makes a better key for a contact than the username.

Can I message an IGSID whenever I like?

No. Meta lets an app reply only within 24 hours of the person’s last message, or up to 7 days for a person answering under the human agent tag. Knowing the ID doesn’t reopen a conversation that has gone quiet.

Do Facebook Pages use IGSIDs?

No. Messenger identifies people by page-scoped ID (PSID), one per person per Page. A business with an Instagram account and a Facebook Page sees each customer under two unrelated IDs, one on each side.
