Circle letters and numbers
Circle letters are letters inside a ring, like ⓐ ⓑ ⓒ or Ⓐ Ⓑ Ⓒ, and Unicode pairs them with circled numbers that run from ⓪ to ㊿. Type below to circle your own words, or copy single numbers from the tables further down. They're Unicode characters rather than a font, so they paste into captions, bios and comments exactly as they are.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Captions and comments | Works | White circled letters and the numbers ① to ⑳ are among the longest-supported characters of this kind and show on nearly every device. |
| Instagram bio and name | Works | Both accept them. Circled numbers make a tidy menu in a bio, such as ① shop ② workshops ③ commissions. |
| Black and bracketed capitals | Partly | 🅐 to 🅩 and 🄐 to 🄩 joined Unicode much later than ⓐ to ⓩ, so an older phone may show boxes. The black numbers ❶ to ❿ are older and safer. |
| Numbers above 20 | Partly | ㉑ to ㊿ come from a block of East Asian enclosed characters, so some phones draw them in a different style from ① to ⑳ and a long list can look mismatched. |
| Instagram username | Doesn't work | Usernames allow plain a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores only, so circled characters are rejected. |
| Facebook profile name | Doesn't work | Profile names must follow Facebook's name standards, which exclude symbols, and Unicode classes every circled letter as a symbol. |
Every circled number Unicode has
Circled numbers are spread over several parts of Unicode, added at different times, which is why no single run goes from 1 to 50. Here is the whole set, ready to copy:
| Numbers | Characters | Unicode block |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | ⓪ | Enclosed Alphanumerics, with the circled letters |
| 1 to 20 | ①②③④⑤⑥⑦⑧⑨⑩⑪⑫⑬⑭⑮⑯⑰⑱⑲⑳ | Enclosed Alphanumerics |
| 21 to 35 | ㉑㉒㉓㉔㉕㉖㉗㉘㉙㉚㉛㉜㉝㉞㉟ | Enclosed CJK Letters and Months |
| 36 to 50 | ㊱㊲㊳㊴㊵㊶㊷㊸㊹㊺㊻㊼㊽㊾㊿ | Enclosed CJK Letters and Months |
| Black 0 to 10 | ⓿❶❷❸❹❺❻❼❽❾❿ | ⓿ from Enclosed Alphanumerics, the rest from Dingbats |
| Black 11 to 20 | ⓫⓬⓭⓮⓯⓰⓱⓲⓳⓴ | Enclosed Alphanumerics |
| Double ring 1 to 10 | ⓵⓶⓷⓸⓹⓺⓻⓼⓽⓾ | Enclosed Alphanumerics |
| Sans-serif 1 to 10 | ➀➁➂➃➄➅➆➇➈➉ ➊➋➌➍➎➏➐➑➒➓ | Dingbats, in white and black |
| Bracketed 1 to 20 | ⑴⑵⑶⑷⑸⑹⑺⑻⑼⑽⑾⑿⒀⒁⒂⒃⒄⒅⒆⒇ | Enclosed Alphanumerics |
The plain circled numbers stop at ㊿. Unicode also has circled tens from 10 to 80 on black squares, ㉈ to ㉏, but they look like a different style. For anything above 50, plain digits are clearer.
Why the generator writes 12 as ①②
The generator converts one character at a time, so a two-digit number becomes two circles: 12 turns into ①② in the bubble style, ❶❷ in black bubbles and ⑴⑵ in brackets. Zero is handled differently in each. Bubble uses ⓪ and black bubble uses ⓿, but Unicode has no bracketed zero, so 10 comes out as ⑴0.
For a single circled 12, copy ⑫ (or ⓬ for black) from the table above and paste it over the pair. One character looks tidier and reads as one number, to people and to screen readers alike.
Circled characters work best as markers
Circled characters do their best work as markers rather than as words. A screen reader that meets ③ in a list may announce something like “circled digit three”, which still tells the listener it's step three. A word spelled in circled letters, by contrast, becomes a string of names. A few ways to use markers on Instagram:
- Recipe or tutorial steps in a caption: ① preheat ② mix ③ bake, each on its own line.
- Carousel guides: “① before ② during ③ after” in the caption, so people know what each slide shows.
- Comment polls: “Which colour should we restock? Ⓐ sage Ⓑ rust Ⓒ navy”. Ask people to reply with the plain letter, which is what they'll type anyway.
- Bio menus: ❶ shop ❷ workshops ❸ commissions, each matching a link on your profile.
- Rankings: “top ⑤ picks”, or a countdown from ❿ to ❶ in a Reel caption.
Tip: Stick to one set per list. ① next to ❷ or ⑶ looks like a mistake, and ⑳ followed by ㉑ can look uneven, because the two come from different blocks.
Circled look-alikes that mean something else
A few circled letters are easy to confuse with symbols that already have a job, and a couple of circled characters are emoji.
| Character | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Ⓒ | Circled capital C, a letter | Styling a word |
| © | The copyright sign | Copyright notices |
| Ⓡ | Circled capital R, a letter | Styling a word |
| ® | The registered sign | Registered trademarks |
| ⓘ | Circled small i, a letter | A quiet info marker that stays in your text colour |
| ℹ️ | The information emoji | A colourful info icon |
| ㊗ ㊙ | Circled Japanese characters for “congratulations” and “secret” | Both are emoji, so many phones show them as coloured buttons |
The difference matters when meaning matters. A copyright line written with Ⓒ looks close enough on screen, but it's a decorative letter rather than the copyright sign, and search and screen readers treat it that way.
Questions people ask
How do I type circled numbers without a generator?
On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Control, Command and Space, then search for “circled”. On Windows, the Character Map app has a search box in its advanced view. On a phone, the quickest route is copying from the tables on this page.
Is there a circled number higher than 50?
Not as a plain circled number: the set ends at ㊿, fifty. The circled tens on black squares only cover multiples of ten up to 80. For bigger numbers, plain digits or a number in brackets, like (51), read best.
Why does ⑳ look different from ㉑?
They come from different parts of Unicode. ① to ⑳ sit with the circled letters, while ㉑ to ㊿ are in a block of East Asian characters that phones often draw with another font. On some devices the difference is barely visible; on others the circle or the digits change size.
Are circle letters the same as bubble letters?
Online, mostly yes: the Bubble style here is circled letters. Bubble letters can also mean the puffy, cartoon lettering drawn on posters, which can't be typed as characters. The bubble letters page covers both.
