What the peace sign emoji means

✌️ shows two fingers raised in a V. Its official name is victory hand, but most people call it the peace sign, and that is mostly how it gets used: peace and good vibes, a casual goodbye (“peace ✌️”), or the go-to pose in a selfie. It can also stand for the number two.

✌️

The peace sign: calm and good vibes, a breezy “peace out,” a selfie pose or a win. In rock, paper, scissors it is scissors.

What ✌️ can mean

1. Peace and good vibes

The V became a peace sign in the 1960s anti-war movement and has kept that easy-going feel. In bios and captions, ✌️ suggests someone relaxed: festival photos, beach days, “no drama, just sunshine.” Next to ☮️ or 🕊️, the post is usually about actual peace, such as a ceasefire or a march.

2. Peace out

“Peace ✌️” or a lone ✌️ closes a chat the way “later” does: friendly, quick and a little cool. Leaving a job, a city or a group chat, it is the casual exit. After an argument it can be colder, a way of walking out of the conversation without saying “I’m done.”

3. The photo pose

Holding up a V for the camera has been a standard snapshot pose in Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan for decades, and selfies spread it everywhere. In a caption, ✌️ often just describes the pose in the picture, or the cheerful mood behind it.

4. Victory, two and scissors

The older meaning is “V for victory,” made famous in Britain during the Second World War and still used after wins and exam passes. It can stand for the number two (“✌️ weeks till the holiday”). And in rock, paper, scissors it is scissors: Unicode’s own notes on the character say so, and friends play the game in chat with ✊, ✋ and ✌️.

When someone sends you ✌️

What it means in a DM

Usually a friendly sign-off: they are heading out and the chat is done for now. At the start of a message (“hey ✌️”), it is a laid-back hello. Watch the timing: after a disagreement, a lone ✌️ can mean “I’m leaving this conversation.” A “catch you later” or a ✌️ back answers the friendly version; the cold one may need a proper message once things cool down.

Is it flirty?

Rarely. ✌️ is breezy and a bit cool, closer to a nod than a wink. Someone who signs off every chat with it is just being casual. Interest shows elsewhere: a 😊 or 😘 with the goodbye, “text me when you’re home,” or plans for next time.

Questions people ask

Is the ✌️ sign ever rude?

The hand gesture can be. In the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, a V made with the back of the hand facing the other person is an insult, much like the middle finger. The emoji is hardly ever read that way, but it is worth knowing before you copy the pose for a photo there.

Why does the peace sign sometimes show up black and white?

Because it is older than emoji. It has been in Unicode since the early 1990s, in a block of printers’ symbols called Dingbats, and Unicode still treats it as a text symbol by default. The colourful version needs an invisible character, the emoji variation selector, straight after it. Emoji keyboards add that for you, but text copied from older sources can show the outline.

What is the difference between ✌️, 🤘 and 🤙?

✌️ is peace, victory or bye. 🤘 sign of the horns means rock and metal music, or simply “that rocks.” 🤙 call me hand is the shaka, the surfers’ “hang loose,” and also a “call me” gesture. All three are friendly; only ✌️ doubles as a goodbye.

What does ✌️ mean in a bio?

Usually a mood rather than a message: relaxed, friendly, no drama. Beside 🕊️ or the word “peace” it can point to anti-war views, and next to a word like “mum” it sometimes just means two, as in “mum of ✌️.”
