What does a raised fist ✊ stand for?
✊ is a fist held high, the long-standing salute of solidarity and resistance. People post it in support of a cause or a community, send it to a friend facing something hard (“stay strong ✊”), and use it as rock in rock, paper, scissors. It is not a punch or a fist bump.

Solidarity and strength: support for a cause or a community, “stay strong,” or rock in rock, paper, scissors.
What ✊ can mean
1. Solidarity and protest
The raised fist is an old protest salute, used by trade unions, anti-fascists, the Black Power movement and anti-apartheid campaigners, and by the two sprinters who raised gloved fists on the podium at the 1968 Olympics. Online, ✊ in a post or a bio says “I stand with this,” and the words around it say what: a strike, a march, a cause. In India it often sits beside “Inquilab Zindabad” (“long live the revolution”) in student and union posts.
2. Black pride and Black Lives Matter
With a darker skin tone, ✊🏾 and ✊🏿 are closely tied to Black pride and to Black Lives Matter, and they filled timelines during the protests of 2020. In a bio or under a post about racial justice, the fist is a statement of support.
3. Stay strong
Sent to one person, ✊ is encouragement: “exams start Monday ✊,” “first day at the new job, you’ll be great ✊.” It says “hang in there,” with a sense of standing beside them. A fist from a friend before a hard week is a small way of saying they’re in your corner.
4. Rock, in rock, paper, scissors
With ✋ and ✌️ it becomes the game. People settle who pays or who picks the film by counting down in the chat and sending their move at once. A single ✊ after “rock, paper, scissors?” is just a move, not a statement.
When someone sends you ✊
What it means in a DM
Usually support. They know you’re facing something and want you to keep going, so thank them and tell them how it’s going if you like. If you’ve been talking about a protest, a strike or a campaign, it means they’re with you. And if the chat was a game of rock, paper, scissors, it’s their move: ✋ beats it.
Is it flirty?
No. ✊ is about strength and standing together, not romance. One caution: in crude jokes, a fist next to 💦 or 🍆 can stand for masturbation, so that pairing is sexual. On its own, or beside a cause or a flag, it isn’t.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between ✊, 👊 and 🤜?
✊ is raised: solidarity, strength or a protest salute. 👊 oncoming fist comes knuckles-first at the viewer, so it reads as a fist bump, a quick “respect” or, in an argument, a punch. 🤛 and 🤜 are the left- and right-facing fists people put side by side for a bump. For “nice one, mate,” 👊 is the usual pick.
Which skin tone should I use for ✊?
Most people use their own tone or the default yellow, as with any hand emoji. That habit matters most in posts about race, where a fist in someone else’s skin tone can look like speaking for a group you don’t belong to.
Is ✊ political?
Often, but not always. In a post about a strike, a protest or a cause it is a statement of support. In a DM before an exam it’s encouragement, and in a game it’s rock. Brands should think twice before using it to sell something, since a protest symbol in an advert can look like borrowing a movement for sales.
Why did someone reply to my joke with ✊?
They are probably using it as a fist bump, a quick “good one,” even though 👊 is the usual choice for that. Plenty of people use the two fists interchangeably. Unless your joke was about a cause, read it as approval.
