What a rose 🌹 means when someone sends one
🌹 usually means romantic love: it is the flower of Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and proposals. It can also say “respect” or “thank you,” mark condolences under a memorial post or, in some display names, signal left-wing politics. Who sent it, and where, tells you which.
Updated 6 October 2026
Mostly romance: love, a crush or Valentine’s Day. It can also mean respect, sympathy after a death, or socialist politics in a bio.
What 🌹 can mean
1. Love and romance
The main meaning. A red rose is the traditional flower of romantic love, so 🌹 fills anniversary posts, proposal Reels and Valentine’s Day messages. In India the flower has a date of its own: Rose Day on 7 February opens Valentine’s Week, followed by Propose Day and Chocolate Day. Viewers of dating shows such as The Bachelor, where getting a rose means you stay another week, also comment 🌹 to back a favourite.
2. Respect, thanks and grief
“Give them their flowers” means praising someone while they can still hear it, and 🌹 is the flower people hand over in comments: under a teacher’s retirement post, a nurse’s last shift or a band’s farewell tour. Roses are also laid on graves, so “RIP 🌹” and 🕊️🌹 are common under memorial posts and on death anniversaries. Here the rose means respect, with no romance in it at all.
3. A political badge
The red rose has stood for socialism and social democracy for decades. Many European parties have used a fist holding a rose, and the UK Labour Party made the red rose its logo in 1986. In the US, a 🌹 beside someone’s name on X or Instagram has signalled democratic socialist politics, often support for the Democratic Socialists of America, since the late 2010s. In a bio during an election, read it as a statement, not a flower.
4. Teams and traditions
England’s rugby teams wear a red rose on the shirt, and the women’s side is nicknamed the Red Roses, so 🌹 fills match-day comments. Lancashire’s emblem is a red rose too, which is why its cricket games against Yorkshire, the white rose, are called the Roses match. In Catalonia, 23 April is Sant Jordi, when people give each other roses and books, and local feeds turn into 🌹📚 for the day.
When someone sends you 🌹
What it means in a DM
Context decides. From a crush or a partner, 🌹 is romantic and fairly direct: it is the flower people give when they mean it. From a friend, it is usually thanks. From an aunt or a family friend, a row of roses may be a warm hello, since good-morning messages in many South Asian and Arab families come decorated with them. From a stranger who opens with “hello dear 🌹,” be wary: flowery openers from unknown accounts are a common spam pattern.
Is it flirty?
Often, yes. A single 🌹 from someone you are talking to romantically is one of the clearer emoji signals, a step past 😊 and close to ❤️. It is not automatically a move, though: the same flower means respect, grief and politeness, and on 7 February in India it may be a friendly Rose Day wish. Look at who sent it and what came with it.

Questions people ask
Is 🌹 always romantic?
No. Romance is the most common reading, but the same flower means respect, sympathy and simple politeness. Under a memorial post it is mourning, under a retirement post it is thanks, and in an older relative’s greeting it is decoration. It is a clear romantic signal mainly between two people who are already flirting.
Why do some people put 🌹 in their name or bio?
Often it is political: the red rose is a long-standing symbol of socialism, and in the US it has marked democratic socialist views for years. It can also stand for a name such as Rose, Rosa or Gulab (Hindi and Urdu for rose), a florist or perfumer, or an England rugby fan.
What is the difference between 🌹 and 🥀?
🌹 is a rose at its best: love, respect, celebration. 🥀 wilted flower is drawn on most phones as a drooping red rose, and it means heartbreak, endings and, since 2025, mock sadness about small letdowns. Sending 🥀 when you meant 🌹 turns a compliment into a sigh.
Can a business use 🌹 in replies?
Yes, with a little care. Florists, perfumers, wedding planners and Valentine’s campaigns use it naturally. As a thank-you to customers it can feel more intimate than 🙏 or 💐, and next to a political topic it can look like a party badge, so a bouquet is the safer pick for plain thanks.
