Emoji meaning
Does 🤙 mean hang loose or call me?
🤙 shows a hand with only the thumb and little finger out. Most people send it as the shaka, Hawaii’s “hang loose”: a laid-back thanks, cool or all good. Its official name is “call me hand,” because the same shape held to your ear looks like a phone, and sometimes that is exactly what the sender means.
Updated 6 October 2026
Usually the shaka: “hang loose,” “all good” or “cheers.” Next to talk of phoning, it means “call me.”
What 🤙 can mean
1. Shaka: hang loose
The everyday meaning. In Hawaii the shaka carries the aloha spirit, a mix of friendship, understanding and compassion, and it works as hello, thanks or “no worries.” Surf culture carried it around the world. Online, 🤙 is a relaxed yes or sign-off: “see you at 7 🤙,” “no stress, take your time 🤙.”
2. Call me
Its Unicode name comes from the phone gesture: thumb by the ear and little finger by the mouth make the handset of an old landline. That meaning appears beside phone talk, as in “easier to explain on the phone 🤙” or “ring me after work 🤙📞.” If the message mentions calling, take it literally.
3. Nice one, sounds good
It also works as an easy-going thumbs-up: approval for a clip, an outfit or a plan. It sits near 😎 in mood, like a thumbs-up with a grin attached, which is why some people pick it over a bare 👍.
4. Six, drinks or the letter Y
The same shape means other things elsewhere. It resembles the Chinese hand sign for the number six. In Australia it is sometimes called “schooies,” after the schooner, a beer glass, so it can suggest a drink. And it’s close to the letter Y in the American manual alphabet. Context tells you whether someone is counting, offering a round or saying hang loose.
When someone sends you 🤙
What it means in a DM
Usually a relaxed sign-off or yes: “cool,” “sounds good,” “cheers.” If it follows a plan, the plan is on. If it comes with “call me,” a 📞 or a question that’s easier to talk through, they’d like a phone call. Send 🤙 back, suggest a time that suits you, or just ring them.
Is it flirty?
Not usually. 🤙 is friendly and easy-going, the emoji of mates and surf buddies. The exception is “call me later 🤙” from someone you’ve been flirting with: wanting to hear your voice is a good sign, though it’s the invitation that counts, not the hand.

Questions people ask
Is 🤙 the same as the “hang loose” sign?
Yes. “Shaka” and “hang loose” are two names for one gesture, and 🤙 is how it appears on an emoji keyboard. In person it often comes with a little shake of the wrist. Unicode named the emoji after the phone meaning in 2016, but the shaka is how most people use it.
What is the difference between 🤙 and 🤘?
🤘 sign of the horns raises the index and little fingers and belongs to rock and metal: a loud “rock on.” 🤙 folds the index finger down and puts the thumb out, which turns it into the easy-going shaka. One is a mosh pit, the other a beach.
Is 🤙 the sign language “I love you”?
No. That is 🤟 love-you gesture, with the thumb, index finger and little finger out, taken from the “I love you” sign in American Sign Language. 🤙 has the index finger folded down, so it doesn’t carry that meaning.
Can a business use 🤙 with customers?
If the brand is casual, yes. Surf shops, cafes, gyms and bike shops use it as a friendly thanks or “see you soon.” It can feel too laid-back from a bank or a clinic, or in reply to a complaint, where plain words work better.
