Fingers crossed: what the emoji means

🤞 is the emoji version of saying “fingers crossed.” People send it when they are hoping something works out: exam results, a job offer, a dry wedding day, a parcel that is running late. It can also be a wink that a promise doesn’t count, because crossing your fingers behind your back is an old way of cancelling one.

🤞

“Fingers crossed”: hoping for good luck or wishing it on someone else, and now and then a jokey sign that a promise isn’t meant.

Name: crossed fingersCode point: U+1F91EAdded in Emoji 3.0

What 🤞 can mean

1. Hoping for the best

The main meaning, the same as the spoken phrase. “Results out tomorrow 🤞” means the sender is nervous and hopeful. It is for things outside your control: test results, visas, the weather, a delayed train, a penalty shootout. A row of them, 🤞🤞🤞, means the hope is getting desperate.

2. Good luck to you

Sent to someone else, 🤞 is a good-luck wish: “interview at 10? 🤞” It sits naturally beside “you’ve got this” and feels warmer than a bare “good luck.” Comments under posts about auditions, driving tests, house offers and fertility treatment fill up with it.

3. A promise with a loophole

In British and American playgrounds, crossing your fingers behind your back while promising something supposedly cancels the promise. Online, “I’ll go to the gym tomorrow, promise 🤞” can be a self-aware joke that the promise is shaky. It is nearly always about small things: diets, early nights, answering emails.

When someone sends you 🤞

What it means in a DM

Almost always hope or support. If they send it about their own news, they are nervous and would welcome encouragement, so “you’ll smash it” or “tell me the minute you hear” is perfect. If it follows a promise, check the tone: a 🤞 after “I’ll be on time” may be a cheeky admission that they won’t.

Is it flirty?

Occasionally, when the hope is about you. “Free on Saturday? 🤞” or “hope you say yes 🤞” shows they want something to happen between you and feel a bit nervous asking. Without that kind of context, 🤞 is about luck, not romance.

Questions people ask

Is 🤞 the K-pop finger heart?

No. The finger heart, made by crossing the thumb and index finger, has its own emoji: 🫰 hand with index finger and thumb crossed, added in 2021. 🤞 crosses the index and middle fingers, which is the luck gesture. Unicode’s character notes cross-reference the two because they are so easy to mix up.

Why does crossing your fingers mean luck?

Nobody knows for certain. A common story links it to the Christian cross, a small sign made to ward off bad luck, but the evidence is thin. What is clear is that “keep your fingers crossed” has been an everyday English phrase for a long time, and the emoji simply borrowed it.

Can I send 🤞 about serious news, like surgery?

Yes. It is widely used that way and reads as hopeful support. For something grave, pair it with words, such as “thinking of you and hoping for good news 🤞,” so it doesn’t look flippant.

Should a business use 🤞 in posts?

In light moments, yes: “Hoping the sun shows up for Saturday’s market 🤞.” Leave it out where customers need certainty, such as delivery dates, restocks they have paid for or refunds, because it hints you aren’t sure either.

When was 🤞 added?

In 2016, with Unicode 9.0. The same update brought 🤙 call me hand, 🤚 raised back of hand and the two side-facing fists, 🤛 and 🤜.
