Tips before you post
Tell close family and friends before you post. A grandparent who finds out from a feed is hurt, and the first calls feel best before the likes arrive.
Photograph the ring in natural light, near a window, with a clean background. A close-up of the hand against something plain, such as a coffee cup, a cardigan or his hand, works well.
Include a photo of the two of you in the carousel, not only the ring. Followers comment on faces and reaction shots more than on a stone.
Add one real detail from the proposal: where, what was said, who was hiding. A story line gets more replies than a general line about being happy.
Think about who you tag. Tag your fiancé, the photographer and the venue if you want them to reshare, and leave out anyone who prefers privacy.
If you want to keep the date or the venue private, leave them out of the caption until you have sent invitations. Strangers can read a public post and the comments.
Questions people ask
What should I write when I announce my engagement?
Keep it short and put the feeling first: “Engaged. Still shaking a little.” Add a detail only the two of you know, such as where it happened. Then tell people the date or the venue later, in a second post.
Should I tell my family before posting?
Yes. Parents and grandparents who learn the news from Instagram are often hurt. A phone call first also means the first reactions are the ones you want, and the post becomes a celebration, not a surprise.
How do I photograph my engagement ring?
Use natural light by a window and a plain background. Keep the stone clean, hold the camera steady, and try a close-up with your hand resting on something soft. Avoid flash, which makes a ring look flat.
Is it okay to post before the ring is sized?
Yes. A ring that slides a little on your finger still photographs fine. Many people post a hand-held photo first and share a proper photoshoot later, which makes a nice second post.
