Tips before you post

  1. Shoot on an overcast morning or in light fog. Soft, even light shows the greens without hard shadows, and mist adds depth between the trees.

  2. Include a person or a trail for scale. A single figure among tall trunks shows the size of the forest in a way that a picture of trees alone does not.

  3. Look down as well as up. Moss, mushrooms, fallen leaves and dew on webs make strong close-up shots that most people walk past.

  4. Do not pick fungi or flowers or disturb wildlife for a photo, and keep to the marked trails. Leave the place as you found it.

  5. In a forest, phone signal is often poor. Save your caption in your notes before you go, and upload when you get back to a signal.

What they get

my favourite forest trails with distance, how long each takes and where to park, plus what I pack in my daypack.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What is a good caption for a forest photo?

Pick a detail in the picture: the light through the leaves, the moss, the mist or the cabin. A short line about that detail reads better than a general line about nature.

When is the best light for forest photography?

Early morning and a cloudy day tend to be kind. Soft light keeps the greens even, and fog or low sun through the trunks gives the shot atmosphere. Harsh midday sun creates patchy, high-contrast shadows.

How do I make forest photos look less flat?

Add a subject: a person on the trail, a log in the foreground or a patch of light. Layers of trunks at different distances also help to give the picture depth.

Should I tag the exact forest in my post?

For public parks and well-known trails, tagging helps others find them. For quiet or fragile places, a broader tag, such as the nearest town or region, may be kinder to the place.
