Write your own

A bio that works usually has the same few parts. Fill them in for yours, or start from the example.

  1. Your name or nickname
  2. Two or three things you're into
  3. One line of personality
  4. Optional: city, birthday or a goal

Worked example

Arjun 🏏 Cricket, cars and late-night chai Quiet until someone mentions football 🎂 14 Aug

Tips for your bio

  1. Sound sure of yourself without sounding cold. A line about what you're working on, like a sport, an exam or a skill, carries the same confidence as a put-down, and it doesn't leave strangers wondering who you're angry at.

  2. Instagram has a pronouns field in Edit profile in many countries. If you want yours shown, use it rather than spending bio characters on “he/him”; it appears next to your name, and you can choose whether everyone or only your followers see it.

  3. Give each interest one emoji and keep them on a single line: 🏏 🎧 🚗 says cricket, music and cars in three characters. Past four or five, a row of emoji starts to look like a password.

  4. Put the name people actually call you in the name field. If everyone knows you as Jay, a search for Jay should find you; a stylized name or an inside joke there makes you harder to find.

  5. Selling something, like cleaned sneakers or haircuts for friends? Make the last line the instruction, such as a DM word, and keep prices out of the bio, because they change faster than you'll remember to edit it.

  6. Reread your bio every few months. A line written at 14 can sound odd at 17, and checking it whenever you change your profile photo keeps the two in step.

Questions people ask

What is a good Instagram bio for boys?

A short one that sounds like you: two or three interests, a hint of personality and, if you like, your city or birthday. “Cricket, cars and late-night chai” tells people more than a long attitude line that's already on a thousand other profiles.

How do I write an attitude bio without sounding rude?

Make it about you, not other people. “Working on myself, not on my excuses” and “Goals in pencil, effort in pen” sound confident. Lines aimed at haters, exes or fake friends tend to read as touchy to anyone who doesn't know the story behind them.

Should I put my birthday in my bio?

Day and month are fine if you like birthday messages, and “Wish me on [date] 🎂” is a popular way to write it. Leave out the year. A full date of birth is one of the details used to confirm identity, so a public bio is the wrong place for it.

Which emoji suit a boy's Instagram bio?

Ones that stand for something real: ⚽ 🏏 🏀 for sport, 🎮 for gaming, 🎧 🎸 for music, 🚗 🏍️ for cars and bikes, 📍 before a city and 🎂 before a birthday. Two to four is plenty. The 😎 and 🔥 found on so many profiles add very little.

Can I write my bio in two languages?

Yes. Instagram shows whatever language and script you type, and bios that mix English with Hindi, Urdu, Spanish or Arabic are common. Hindi written in Latin letters (Hinglish) is easier to read for friends who don't read Devanagari.
