Slang meaning
What does WTV mean?
WTV is short for “whatever.” Sometimes it means “anything is fine with me,” as in “get wtv you want.” Other times it ends the conversation, the way a shrug and an eye roll would. The message before it usually tells you which one you got.

Texting shorthand for “whatever”: easygoing when it means “any option works,” cold when it means “I'm done.”
What WTV can mean
1. Anything works
The relaxed use. “bring chips or wtv” means bring chips or something like them. “wear wtv, it's casual” means there's no dress code. Here it's filler that keeps a plan loose, with no attitude behind it.
2. I'm done arguing
Sent alone, or as “ok wtv,” after a disagreement, it's a shrug in text form. It says the writer has stopped arguing, not that they agree. In a tense chat it can feel colder than an angry message, because it closes the door on the conversation.
3. So what
Mid-story, it waves something aside: “he never texted back, wtv, his loss.” This version is about shrugging off a setback and sounding unbothered, sometimes more unbothered than the writer really is.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Group chats making plans
The friendliest home for wtv. “pizza or tacos, wtv everyone wants” keeps a plan flexible, and nobody reads anything into it.
DMs after a disagreement
A lone “wtv” or “k wtv” after a back-and-forth is the one to watch. It usually means the person feels unheard and has given up for now. Making another point rarely helps; asking “are we okay?” often does.
Captions and Notes
Captions use it to look unbothered: “bad hair day, wtv, the sunset made up for it.” In an Instagram Note, a bare “wtv” reads as a mood update, and close friends may reply to check in.
Messages from customers
When a customer answers “wtv” to a question about sizes or delivery slots, they've probably run out of patience. A short, specific answer and a clear next step works better than another question.

How to reply to WTV
Where it comes from
“Whatever” as a one-word brush-off was a teen staple by the 1990s, and the 1995 film Clueless even gave it a hand sign, a W made with the thumbs and fingers. Texting shrank it to wtv, along with wtvr and the spoken “whatevs.”
Questions people ask
How can I tell if “wtv” is friendly or annoyed?
Look at what came before it. After a question about plans (“where should we eat?”), it means “anything's fine.” After an argument or a long explanation, especially as “ok wtv,” it means the person is done. A full stop after it makes it sound flatter still.
Is it WTV or WTVR?
Both mean “whatever,” and so does “whatevs,” the playful spoken version. People use whichever they type fastest; none of them changes the meaning.
What is a .wtv file?
Something unrelated to the slang. WTV is the file format Windows Media Center used for recorded TV shows. If you found the letters as a file extension on an old PC, that's what it is.
Should a business ever write “wtv” to a customer?
Better not. Even the relaxed meaning can read as careless to someone paying you, and the dismissive one would sting. “Any of these works” or “whichever you prefer” says the same thing politely.
