Updated 6 October 2026
K is a short form of “OK”: a quick yes that can sound curt, and also “thousand” after a number.
What k can mean
1. OK, said briefly
A fast agreement: “k, see you there.” When it is the full reply to a long message, though, the shortness is the message. It can mean the person is busy, bored or annoyed.
2. Curt or passive-aggressive
A lone “k” after an apology or an invitation is widely read as a cold response. “Okay” sounds warmer and “kk” or “k!” sounds friendlier, so the single letter stands out.
3. Thousand
After a number, K means a thousand: 10k followers, 2.5k likes. It is how Instagram itself displays counts, so it will appear on almost every profile.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs
Where the cold reading matters most. A “k” after a long message is hard to interpret, and many people take it as a sign the other person has stopped engaging. A thumbs-up or “okay!” avoids that.
Comments
Under a post, a lone “k” is usually a dismissive reaction to someone else’s comment: “k.” It carries the tone of “whatever,” not agreement.
Profiles, captions and Reels
The thousand sense: “hit 10k today!” or “1.2k views.” In captions the lower-case k is normal and has no tone at all.

How to reply to k
Where it comes from
K is a shortening of OK, an American coinage of the 1830s that spread worldwide. The single-letter form is a product of texting and chat, where fewer keystrokes were an advantage.
Questions people ask
Why does a single “k” feel rude?
Because it takes less effort than “okay” or “sure,” so in reply to something that mattered it can look like the sender is brushing it off. It is a matter of tone, not an official rule.
What is the difference between k and kk?
“Kk” is usually warmer and more agreeable, a friendly “okay, okay.” A single “k” is shorter and more likely to read as cold, though some people use it with no edge at all.
Does “k” mean the same as “K” in 10K?
No. After a number, K is the metric prefix for thousand, so 10K is 10,000. On its own as a reply, k is short for OK. Context separates the two.
Should I use “k” with customers?
No. A bare “k” can feel dismissive to someone who asked a question. “Sure, I’ve noted that” takes a few more characters and reads better.
