Slang meaning
What does SB mean?
SB has no single answer. In most chats it is short for “somebody,” on Snapchat it means “snap back,” and on business accounts it can mean “small business.” The context tells you which.
Updated 6 October 2026
SB usually means “somebody” in texts and “snap back” on Snapchat. It can also stand for “small business”.
What SB can mean
1. Somebody
The most common reading in plain chats. “sb left their umbrella here” just means someone did. It is a way of saving two syllables, and it is usually written in lower case.
2. Snap back
A Snapchat habit: “sb” is a request to send a snap in return, often to keep a streak going. If you see it in an Instagram DM from someone who also uses Snapchat, they are probably asking you to answer them there.
3. Small business
Some Instagram accounts shorten “small business” to SB in captions or hashtags, as in “support sb.” It is less common than writing the words out, and you will almost always see the long form next to it first.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and texts
A single “sb” inside a sentence nearly always stands for “somebody.” If it is the whole message, with nothing else, it is more likely a nudge to reply.
Snapchat crossover
People who run streaks on Snapchat may carry the habit into other apps. When the chat is about snaps, streaks or photos, read it as “snap back.”
Business captions and bios
On a shop or maker’s account, “SB” beside “shop local” or “support” points to small business. The surrounding words settle it.

Questions people ask
How can I tell which meaning of SB someone intends?
Look at the sentence. Inside a sentence about a person, it is “somebody.” As a standalone nudge it is “snap back.” Next to words like “shop” or “support,” it is “small business.” If you are still unsure, just ask.
Does SB have a rude meaning?
Some web lists give adult meanings for the letters on dating apps. Those are rare, and nothing in ordinary comments or DMs points to them. If a message looks out of place, ask what the sender means, or ignore it.
Is there an official definition of SB?
No. Unlike “lol” or “brb,” the letters are shared by several unrelated uses, and none is recognised as the standard. That is why it pays to read the context first.
What if a friend’s SB fits none of these meanings?
Friend groups invent their own readings, so it may well be an in-joke. Ask them. Guessing wrong on a two-letter message is easy, and nobody minds being asked.
