Slang meaning
What does chopped mean?
In teen slang, chopped means ugly. It's said about faces, haircuts and outfits, and it's harsher than calling something mid. By 2025 it had also stretched to anything bad or disappointing, so “that's chopped” can describe a test, a game update or a soggy pizza.

Teen slang for ugly, said about faces, haircuts and outfits; by 2025 kids were also using it for anything bad.
What chopped can mean
1. Ugly
This sense came first, and aimed at a person it's an insult about their looks. “He's chopped” means he isn't good-looking, and it lands harder than “mid,” which only means average. It also covers choices people make about their appearance: a chopped haircut, a chopped outfit, a chopped profile picture.
2. Bad, broken or disappointing
Kids soon stretched it to anything they don't like. A game update that wrecked the map is chopped, and so is a maths test, a rained-off sports day or a pizza that arrived cold. Used this way, “that's chopped” is close to “that's rubbish” and says nothing about anyone's looks.
3. Cut up, cut out, or slowed down
The ordinary meanings still apply: chopped onions, a hair appointment where you had it all chopped off, a worker who got the chop. On the TV cooking contest Chopped, a chef who is chopped goes home. And chopped and screwed is a remix style from 1990s Houston hip-hop, with the track slowed right down and parts cut up and repeated.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comments on selfies and haircuts
This is where it hurts. A one-word “chopped” or “chopped 💀” under a teenager's selfie or new haircut is a verdict on their looks, and other commenters can pile in. Instagram lets account holders hide comments containing words they choose, and restrict accounts that keep doing it.
Reels and memes
Glow-up and transformation videos lean on it: the “before” shot is chopped, the “after” is not. Meme pages use it as a punchline about cartoon characters, footballers' haircuts and unloved new buildings, where it's closer to a joke than an attack.
Group chats and classrooms
Among kids, the stretched meaning is everywhere: lunch is chopped, the new timetable is chopped, the bus being late is chopped. In August 2025 HuffPost UK quoted a teacher who said pupils had moved on from using it only for ugly to using it for anything they don't like.
Parents' posts on Facebook
Parents ask about it after hearing it at home, often because a child has called a school photo, a haircut or a family day out chopped. Said about things, it usually just means “I don't like it,” though a child using it about classmates is worth a conversation.

How to reply to chopped
Questions people ask
How is chopped different from mid?
Mid means average: not bad, not good, nothing special. Chopped means actually ugly or actually bad, so it's the harsher verdict. “The film was mid” is a shrug; “the film was chopped” is a thumbs-down.
Is chopped the same as cooked?
No, though they often turn up together. Cooked means you're in trouble or doomed: “I haven't revised, I'm cooked.” Chopped is about how something looks or turned out. A ruined haircut is chopped; the person who has to go to school with it tomorrow is cooked.
What does chuzz mean?
It blends chopped with huzz, a crude slang word for girls or women, so it means roughly “ugly girls.” HuffPost UK flagged it in 2025 among the cruder words kids were using. It's demeaning, and worth challenging if a child uses it about classmates.
Where does chopped come from?
Nobody has pinned it down. Explanations online range from African American slang to a single viral meme, and none is well documented. What is clear is how fast it moved: by August 2025 it was common enough for HuffPost UK to explain it to adults. Slang this quick drifts, so as of October 2026 expect both meanings, plus new spin-offs.
What if someone calls my child chopped?
Treat it like any other comment about looks. Ask how it felt rather than arguing about whether it's true. A one-off from a friend is often careless teasing; the same word from the same people every day is bullying, and worth raising with the school.
