Slang meaning

What does IB mean?

IB has three common meanings online: “inspired by,” “in bio” and “inbox.” The one you need is nearly always clear from what sits next to it.

Updated 6 October 2026

IB usually means “inspired by” when it credits someone, “in bio” when it points to a link, or “inbox” in “ib me.”

Stands for: Inspired by, in bio, or inboxTone: practical, informal, mostly neutral

What IB can mean

1. Inspired by

Followed by a tagged account, as in “ib @name,” it credits whoever sparked the idea for a post or edit. It acknowledges influence but is not the same as asking permission, and it does not mean the original creator agreed to anything.

2. In bio

Used when the link or details live in the profile: “link ib,” “prices ib.” It is a shorter version of “link in bio,” and the clue is the word before it, such as link, shop, order or details.

3. Inbox

“Ib me” or “ib for price” means send a private message. It is seen on sales posts in some regions, particularly in South Asia, and it is a shortening of “inbox.” If the sentence asks you to contact someone, this is the one.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Captions and pinned comments

Creators who reuse an idea, a transition or an outfit often write “ib” and the original account’s handle in the caption or the first comment, so followers can find where the idea started.

  • Product posts and Reels

A seller writes “details ib” because Instagram captions can’t hold a clickable link. It is the same instruction as “link in bio.”

  • Facebook sales posts and comments

“Ib for price” under a post means the seller wants buyers to message privately instead of listing the price in public. Buyers reply with “ib” once they have sent the message.

How to reply to IB

Where it comes from

IB is a plain shortening in all three senses: “inspired by,” “in bio” and “inbox.” None has a documented single origin, and the meaning depends on where it is used. It is also the usual abbreviation of the International Baccalaureate, which has nothing to do with social media.

Questions people ask

How do I know which IB someone means?

Read the neighbouring words. An @handle after it means “inspired by.” “Link,” “shop” or “order” means “in bio.” “Me,” “for price” or “for details” means “inbox.” If you still can’t tell, ask.

Does writing IB mean I can reuse someone’s work?

No. “Inspired by” is a courtesy credit, not a licence. If you copy someone’s photo, edit or text, you still need their permission, and a credit doesn’t replace it.

Is IB the same as DM me?

In the inbox sense, yes: both ask for a private message. “Ib” is shorter and more common on sales posts in some regions, while “DM me” is the global phrase on Instagram.

Does IB also mean the International Baccalaureate?

Yes, outside social media. Students and schools write IB for that qualification. In a student’s caption about exams it is probably the diploma, not a social media shortcut.
