JK means “just kidding”: it tells the reader you were joking and didn’t mean what you just said.
What JK can mean
1. Just kidding
The standard meaning. It goes at the end of the joke to cancel it: “I ate the last slice, jk, I saved you one.” It is also written “j/k” or “jkjk.” It can tidy up a joke that landed badly, though it does not undo a hurtful one.
2. Japanese school-girl slang
In Japanese internet slang, JK is short for “joshi kōsei,” a female high-school student. You will mostly meet this in anime and manga fan spaces. If the surrounding chat is in Japanese or about anime, it is the likelier reading.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and group chats
The most common home for it. People tag a fib or a tease with jk so the other person knows not to take it seriously: “I'm moving to Norway. jk.”
Instagram comments
Used to take the edge off a roast or a challenge under a friend’s post. It often appears with 😂 or 😜, and “jk jk” stretches the apology.
Stories and captions
Used in set-ups and punchlines: a Story saying “quitting my job tomorrow” followed by a slide that says “jk.” It is also a cheap way to tease an announcement.

Questions people ask
Is it JK or J/K?
Both mean the same. “J/K” is the older, slashed spelling and “jk” is the usual one now. Capitals or lower case do not change the meaning.
Does JK make a mean joke okay?
Not really. It signals that you were joking, but it doesn’t remove the sting if what you said was unkind. Saying something cruel and adding jk can make it feel worse, because it dodges responsibility.
What is the difference between JK and LOL?
LOL reacts to something funny that has already been said. JK retracts or reframes a statement you just made. JK points backward at your own words; LOL points at the joke.
What does JK mean in anime or Japanese chat?
There it often stands for “joshi kōsei,” a female high-school student. The context is usually clear from the language and the topic. It is unrelated to “just kidding.”
