Slang meaning

What does IDK mean?

IDK means “I don't know.” Often that's all it means. It also softens an opinion (“idk, I liked the first one better”), and from a tired teenager or a bored match it can be a polite way of not answering at all.

Updated 6 October 2026

An honest shrug, a cushion before an opinion, or a quiet way out of a question: idk is “I don't know.”

Stands for: I don't knowTone: unsure or shrugging; sometimes polite, sometimes evasive

What IDK can mean

1. I really don't know

The literal use. Asked what time the shop shuts or who's driving on Saturday, the honest answer is idk. It often comes with an offer to find out, as in “idk, I'll check,” which turns a dead end into a helpful reply. Stretched to idkkk, it sounds more puzzled, or more playful.

2. A cushion before an opinion

Lots of people open a view with idk to make it sound less forceful: “idk, maybe we should leave earlier.” They usually do know what they think. The idk invites the other person to disagree without a fight, so read it as “I could be wrong, but.”

3. A way to dodge the question

From someone who doesn't want to engage, idk closes the topic. “what do you want for dinner?” “idk.” Parents of teenagers hear it constantly, and on dating apps a run of idk replies usually means low interest. It isn't always rude: sometimes the person is tired, unsure or not ready to say.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • DMs and group chats

Where idk lives. It answers plans (“idk what time yet”), softens suggestions and turns up in chains like “idk idc whatever you want.” A lone idk to a direct question can feel cold, so many people add a second line or an emoji to keep it friendly.

  • Comments asking for help

Under recipes, tutorials and product posts, idk usually comes with a real question: “idk which size to get,” “idk what I did wrong but mine collapsed.” They're easy wins for the account, and a helpful reply is seen by everyone else with the same doubt.

  • Messages to small businesses

Customers write “idk my size” or “idk which one to pick” in DMs. It's a request for guidance, not indecision to wait out. One specific question back, such as their usual size in another shop, gets to an answer fastest.

  • Captions and Notes

In captions it's often comic: “idk who needs to hear this, but” opens a joke or a pep talk, and “idk what this is but I love it” sits under an odd photo. As an Instagram Note, a bare “idk” reads as a mood, the text version of staring at the ceiling.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between idk, idek and idc?

IDK is “I don't know.” IDEK, “I don't even know,” adds exasperation or confusion: “idek what happened.” IDC means “I don't care,” which is a different message altogether. Mixing up idk and idc can make you sound much colder than you meant.

My teenager answers everything with “idk.” Should I worry?

Usually not. For many teens idk is a way to stall: they're tired, unsure or not ready to talk. Asking again later, or asking something easier to answer than “how was your day?”, often works better. If it comes with bigger changes in mood or sleep, a gentle conversation is worth having.

Is it okay to say idk to a customer?

Not on its own. A bare idk can sound like you don't care, even when you're simply being honest. “I'm not sure, let me check and come back to you today” takes a few more words and keeps the customer's trust.

What does “idk man” mean?

It's a weary shrug at something that makes no sense, as in “a parking fine for a car I sold last year? idk man.” It isn't asking for an answer. The speaker has simply given up trying to understand it.
