Instagram highlight cover size
Make Instagram highlight covers 1080 × 1920 pixels, the size of a Story, and keep the icon inside the middle 764 × 764. We found no size from Meta, so this is the commonly recommended size rather than an official one. Your profile shows only a small circle cut from the centre of the image; the top, bottom and corners are never seen.

Highlight coverrecommended size
1080 × 1920px
9:16 aspect ratio · vertical
- Recommended size
- 1080 × 1920 px (9:16), the commonly recommended size; we found no figure from Meta
- Also works
- A square such as 1080 × 1080 px, since only a circle is kept either way
- What the profile shows
- A small circle from the middle of the image, as wide as the image unless you zoom in
- The circle on a 1080 × 1920 canvas
- 1,080 px across, from 420 to 1,500 px down
- Safe square for the icon
- The middle 764 × 764 px: 578 to 1,342 px down, 158 to 922 px across
- Icon size we suggest
- About 400 to 550 px wide, with a ring of plain background around it
- File type
- PNG for flat icons, JPG for photos; Hootsuite suggests downloading designs in either format
- Posting the cover first
- Not needed: choose it from your camera roll in Edit cover, and nothing is shared to your Story
- Highlight name
- Shown under the circle, so the cover doesn’t need to spell it out
- How long it stays
- Until you remove it; unlike a Story, a highlight doesn’t expire after 24 hours
Resize a photo to 1080 × 1920 px
Free and private: choose how your photo fills the Instagram Highlight cover frame, check the safe zone and save it at exactly 1080 × 1920 px.
Shaded: the top 575 px, the bottom 575 px and 160 px at each side, where the app's buttons and text can sit. The shading is only on the preview, not in your download. A guideline, not a Meta figure: the clear box is the largest square inside the circle a 1080 × 1920 cover shows, 764 × 764 px in the middle.

Why covers are made at Story size
A highlight is a set of your Stories saved under your bio, and its cover is the circle people tap to open it. Meta recommends a 9:16 shape for Stories, which the main guides put at 1080 × 1920 pixels, but we found no size for the cover itself, and neither Sprout Social’s nor Hootsuite’s image size guide lists one. Cover templates and size sites settle on 1080 × 1920, the Story canvas, and a cover can also be picked straight from a Story already in the highlight.
| Canvas | What the circle keeps | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 1080 × 1920 (9:16) | A circle 1,080 px across from the middle; 420 px above and below are left out | The usual choice, and the same file works as a Story |
| 1080 × 1080 (1:1) | A circle touching all four sides; only the corners are lost | Just as good when you upload the cover from your camera roll |
| A Story frame with words on it | Whatever happens to fall in the middle | Avoid it: the circle tends to land on half a sentence |
The two canvases end up the same, because the profile only ever shows the circle. Choose 1080 × 1920 if you want one template for covers and Stories alike, or a square if the files will only ever be covers.
Where the circle falls on a 1080 × 1920 canvas
Unless you move or zoom the image while setting it, the cover is a circle as wide as the image, centred on it. On a 1080 × 1920 file the circle runs from 420 to 1,500 pixels down. The largest square that fits inside it is about 764 pixels a side, so an icon kept within that square never meets the rim.
| Area | Pixels on a 1080 × 1920 canvas | What happens to it |
|---|---|---|
| Top band | 0 to 420 px down | Left out of the cover |
| Circle | 420 to 1,500 px down, full width | Shown, but its rim slices through anything near the edge |
| Safe square | 578 to 1,342 px down, 158 to 922 px across | Always shown in full |
| Bottom band | 1,500 to 1,920 px down | Left out of the cover |
Tip: Put a 1,080 px circle and a 764 px square on a guide layer in your template. Every new cover then lines up with the others, which matters more in a row of five circles than in one.
Designing for a very small circle
Hootsuite’s guide to highlight covers makes the key point: the circles are small, so don’t crowd them with text or complicated images. People take in a row of covers at a glance while deciding what to tap, so each one needs a single shape that is recognisable without reading.
- One simple icon per cover, about half the width of the circle: roughly 500 px on a 1,080 px canvas.
- Bold, even strokes, around 30 px or thicker on the canvas. Hairline icons that look elegant at full size break up when shrunk.
- Strong contrast between icon and background. Two similar mid-tones merge into one blob.
- No words in the circle unless the word is the design. The highlight’s name already sits underneath.
- One background treatment for the whole row, such as a single colour or a family of brand colours. Sprout Social suggests pairing brand colours with icons or words.
Check the row in light and dark mode. The profile background is white in one and black in the other, so a white-backed cover becomes a bright disc on a dark screen, and a pale icon on a pale background can disappear altogether.
Changing the cover of a highlight
You can swap a cover whenever you like without touching the Stories inside the highlight. In the app:
- Open your profile, tap the highlight, then tap More at the bottom right and choose Edit highlight. Pressing and holding the highlight on your profile offers the same option.
- Tap Edit cover near the top of the screen.
- Tap the photo icon near the bottom to pick an image from your camera roll, or choose one of the Stories already in the highlight.
- Adjust the image until the icon sits in the middle of the circle, then tap Done and save the highlight.
Picking an image from your camera roll doesn’t share anything. Hootsuite’s guide confirms the cover can come straight from your camera roll, so there is no need to post it as a Story first and delete it afterwards.
A row of covers that works like a menu
On a business profile, highlights are the part that doesn’t scroll away. A new visitor can jump straight to prices or reviews without digging through posts, so plan the row as a menu and give each item an icon that says what is inside.
| Kind of account | Highlights worth having | Icon ideas |
|---|---|---|
| Bakery or café | Menu, Order, Hours, Reviews | A cake slice, a paper bag, a clock, a star |
| Salon or clinic | Prices, Book, Results, Team | Scissors, a calendar, a sparkle, a smiling face |
| Coach or tutor | Start here, Results, Programmes, FAQ | A flag, a rising chart, an open book, a question mark |
| Online shop | New in, Sizing, Delivery, Reviews | A tag, a tape measure, a van, a heart |
| Creator | About, Kit, Collabs, Best of | A waving hand, a camera, a handshake, a trophy |
If you run comment keyword offers, a highlight that explains them, such as “Comment GUIDE on any reel for the checklist”, keeps the instructions in front of new visitors long after the original Story has expired.
Mistakes that make a row of covers look messy
- Icons that reach the rim of the circle and lose their tips.
- Mixed styles: a photo on one cover, a line icon on the next and a word on the third.
- Covers in slightly different shades of the brand colour, because each was exported from a different app.
- Flat icons saved as low-quality JPGs, which leaves smudges around the edges; PNG keeps them clean.
- Thin, pale icons that vanish once the circle is shrunk.
- Restyling one cover and forgetting the rest, so the row stops looking like a set.

Questions people ask
What size should an Instagram highlight cover be?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 image the size of a Story, with the icon inside the middle 764 × 764. We found no size from Meta; 1080 × 1920 is the one most cover templates and size sites use. A 1080 × 1080 square works as well, because the profile only shows a circle from the middle.
Do I need to post a highlight cover to my Story?
No. In Edit cover, tap the photo icon near the bottom of the screen and choose an image from your camera roll. It becomes the cover without ever being shared as a Story.
Why does my highlight cover look zoomed in or cut off?
The cover is a circle as wide as your image, taken from its middle, so anything near the top, bottom or corners of a 1080 × 1920 design falls outside it. Move the icon into the central 764 × 764 pixels, or reposition the image in the circle before tapping Done.
Should highlight covers be PNG or JPG?
PNG for flat icons and lettering, since it keeps the edges crisp, and JPG for covers made from photos. Hootsuite’s guide to highlight covers suggests downloading finished designs in either format.
Does changing a cover change the Stories in the highlight?
No. The cover is only the circle on your profile. The Stories inside the highlight stay exactly as they were, and you can change the cover again as often as you like.
Do highlights disappear after 24 hours like Stories?
No. A Story on its own disappears after 24 hours, but once it is saved to a highlight it stays on your profile, under its cover, until you remove it or delete the highlight.
