Make Instagram highlight covers that match
Pick an icon, an emoji or a few letters, put it on a colour, a gradient or a photo, and see it as the small circle your profile shows. Add several covers to a set, so they share one style, and download them together as a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded: your photo and designs stay in this page.
How it works
1Pick what goes on the cover
Choose one of 61 line icons we drew for this tool, an emoji from your device, or one to three letters. Give it a name to see it under its circle.
2Set the background and look
A plain colour, one of eight gradients or your own photo, then the icon colour, size and line weight. Check it on a light and a dark profile.
3Build a matching set
Press Add to my set after each cover. Every cover in the set shares the background, colour and size, so the row stays even whenever you change them.
4Download
Save one cover as a PNG or JPEG, or the whole set as a ZIP. Each file is 1080 × 1920 (or 1080 × 1080) with the design centred.
What the circle shows, and what is only a guide
Highlight covers show on your profile as a small circle taken from the middle of the image. Meta publishes no size for them. We checked Meta’s developer documentation on 7 October 2026: it recommends a 9:16 shape for Story images, but says nothing about highlight covers. So 1080 × 1920, the size of a Story, is common practice rather than a rule, and the circle in this tool is a guide you can edit.
By default the guide is a circle as wide as the image, centred on it. On a 1080 × 1920 file that is a 1080 px circle running from 420 to 1500 px down, and the largest square inside it is about 764 px a side. The dashed square on the preview marks that square. Keep the icon inside it and the rim cannot clip it. If your profile crops tighter, lower the circle width slider and the preview follows.
Our guide to highlight cover sizes lists the same numbers with the sources we found for each.
Making a row that looks like one set
- Use one background treatment across the row. A single colour, or one gradient, looks deliberate; five different photos look accidental.
- Keep the icon about half the width of the circle. Roughly 400 to 550 px on the 1080 px canvas is a rule of thumb, not a Meta figure.
- Choose a heavier line weight than feels necessary. Thin icons look elegant at full size and disappear when the circle is small.
- Check the Dark mode button on the preview. A pale icon on a pale cover can vanish against a white profile, and a white cover glows on a dark one.
- Leave words off the cover. The highlight’s name already sits under the circle, so the cover only needs one clear shape.
Tip: Plan the row as a menu. For a café that might be Menu, Order, Hours and Reviews, each with its own icon from the cake, bag, clock and star shapes.
Getting the cover onto Instagram
Save the cover to your phone’s photos, open the highlight on your profile, tap Edit highlight, then Edit cover, and choose the image from your camera roll. You do not have to post it as a Story first. If you made the cover on a computer, send the file to your phone with AirDrop, a message to yourself or a cloud folder.
Choose PNG for flat icons and letters, because it keeps their edges crisp. Choose JPEG for covers made from photos, where the file is smaller and the difference is invisible at circle size.
Emoji are drawn with your device’s own emoji font. An emoji made on an iPhone will look like Apple’s version in the file, and one made on Windows will look like Microsoft’s. Once saved, the picture does not change with whoever views it.
Questions people ask
What size is an Instagram highlight cover?
Most guides recommend 1080 × 1920 pixels, the same shape as a Story, with the icon in the middle. We found no size published by Meta, so treat it as common practice. The profile shows a circle cut from the middle, so a 1080 × 1080 square works as well.
Are the icons free to use?
Yes. The 61 icons were drawn for this tool, they are not taken from an icon library, and the covers you make are yours to use on your own accounts and for clients.
Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?
No. Your background photo is read and drawn inside this page. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no upload to wait for and no copy of your picture held anywhere else.
Why does my emoji look different from the one I picked?
The tool draws emoji with the emoji font on your device, so it matches your keyboard. The picture you save keeps that look. If you want a different design, use an icon or letters, which look the same on every device.
Can I make a whole set at once?
Yes. Press Add to my set after each cover, then Download the set. You get one file per cover in a ZIP, named in order, and every cover shares the same background and icon style.
Do I have to post the cover as a Story first?
No. In Edit cover you can choose an image straight from your camera roll, so the cover is never shared as a Story. Save it to your phone first.
