Instagram Story safe zone
On a 1080 × 1920 Instagram Story, keep text, logos and stickers between 269 and 1,248 pixels from the top and at least 65 pixels in from each side. That box comes from Meta’s margins for Story ads: 14% at the top, about 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side. Everyday Stories have less in the way, but the same box works for both.

Shaded: the top 270 px, the bottom 670 px and 65 px at each side, where the app's buttons and text can sit. The shading is only on the preview, not in your download. The safe zone, mapped in pixels
Meta’s ads guide asks for text, logos and other key elements to stay out of three strips of a Story: the top 14%, roughly the bottom 35%, and 6% down each side. Anything placed there may be cropped, or hidden behind the profile icon or the call-to-action button. On the 1080 × 1920 canvas most people design on, the strips land here.
| Part of the Story | Pixels on a 1080 × 1920 canvas | What can cover or cut it |
|---|---|---|
| Top strip | 0 to 269 px down | Progress bars, your profile photo and name, the time posted |
| Safe box | 269 to 1,248 px down and 65 to 1,015 px across | Nothing, so every word, logo and sticker goes here |
| Bottom strip | 1,248 to 1,920 px down | The reply field and buttons; on an ad, the call-to-action |
| Side strips | The outer 65 px on the left and right | Possible cropping, which Meta warns about |
Designing at Meta’s ad resolution of 1440 × 2560 instead? The same percentages come to about 358 pixels at the top, 896 at the bottom and 86 on each side, so the clear box runs from roughly 358 to 1,664 pixels down.
What covers each edge of a Story
A Story is never shown bare. Instagram lays its own controls over the picture, and they differ between an ordinary Story, an ad and the view you get of your own Story.
- Top, on every Story: one thin progress bar per Story in the set, then the profile photo, account name and how long ago it was posted, with the menu and close buttons at the right.
- Bottom, on an ordinary Story: the “Send message” field, with buttons to like the Story and share it.
- Ads: a Sponsored label at the top and a call-to-action button at the bottom, which takes up more height than a reply field.
- Sides: no fixed buttons, but Meta warns that elements near the edges may be cropped, which is why its guide keeps 6% clear on each side.
Tip: Checking your own Story isn’t a fair test. As the owner you see viewer activity and your own buttons along the bottom, not the reply field your followers see, so ask a friend to screenshot it from their phone.
Why size guides give different numbers
Search for the Story safe zone and you will find at least three answers. Meta’s are the strictest because they are written for ads, where the call-to-action button covers a deep band at the bottom. Third-party guides give looser figures aimed at everyday Stories.
| Source | What it says | Clear height on a 1,920 px Story |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Ads Guide, for Story ads | Keep 14% at the top, about 35% at the bottom and 6% at each side free | About 979 px |
| Sprout Social and Hootsuite | A safe area of 1080 × 1610 px | 1,610 px |
| Sprout Social, same guide | Leave 250 px at the top and 340 px at the bottom free | 1,330 px |
Sprout Social’s two figures can’t describe the same box: margins of 250 and 340 pixels leave 1,330 pixels, not 1,610. Its percentages don’t match its pixels either, since 14% of 1,920 is about 269 and 20% is 384. Our advice: use Meta’s box for anything that carries a link, an offer or an ad, and at least Sprout Social’s 250 and 340 pixels for a casual Story.
Where stickers, links and subtitles go
Interactive stickers need the safe box more than text does, because people have to tap them. A link, poll or question sticker that slides under the reply field is hard to read and harder to tap.
- Link stickers: put them in the lower part of the box, roughly 900 to 1,200 pixels down, near the thumb but clear of the reply field.
- Polls, quizzes and question boxes: they take up a lot of room, so place them first and fit your text around them.
- Mention and hashtag stickers: keep them inside the box as well; one dropped in the top strip sits right under your own name.
- Countdown stickers: treat them like links, since their whole job is to be tapped.
- Subtitles on video: captions are often placed near the bottom of the frame, as on television, which on a Story is under the reply field. Lift them to about 1,050 to 1,200 pixels down.
Make a safe-zone template once
- Create a 1080 × 1920 canvas in your design app and save it as a template.
- Draw a band 269 px deep across the top, one 672 px deep across the bottom and a 65 px strip down each side.
- Fill the bands with a see-through red on a separate layer, and lock that layer.
- Design every Story with the bands showing, then hide the layer before exporting.
- Export at 1080 × 1920, as a JPG or PNG for stills or an MP4 for video, so Instagram has no reason to enlarge or crop it.
- After posting, ask a friend for a screenshot from their phone and check all four edges.

Questions people ask
What is the Instagram Story safe zone?
The part of a Story that Instagram’s buttons and labels never cover. Using Meta’s figures for Story ads, it is a box of about 950 × 979 pixels on a 1080 × 1920 Story, starting 269 pixels from the top and 65 pixels in from each side.
How many pixels should I leave at the top and bottom of a Story?
About 269 at the top and 672 at the bottom for anything important; those are Meta’s 14% and 35% margins for Story ads. For a casual Story, the lighter 250 and 340 pixels in Sprout Social’s guide is usually enough.
Do everyday Stories need the same margins as ads?
Not strictly. Meta’s bottom margin allows for an ad’s call-to-action button, which is deeper than the reply field on an ordinary Story. Following it anyway costs a little space and keeps the design usable if you later turn the Story into an ad.
Why is the text on my Story cut off or covered?
Either it sits under the bars at the top or bottom, or the image wasn’t 9:16 and Instagram enlarged it to fill the screen, trimming the edges. Export at 1080 × 1920 and keep words inside the safe box.
Where should I put a link sticker on a Story?
Inside the safe box, toward its lower edge: about 900 to 1,200 pixels down on a 1080 × 1920 Story. That is within easy reach of a thumb without touching the reply field.
Is the Story safe zone the same as the Reel safe zone?
Not quite. Reels add a column of like, comment and share buttons down the right side and the caption along the bottom, so they need more room on the right than a Story. The Reel safe zone guide covers those margins.
