Facebook Page name rules

A Facebook Page name has to read like a name, not a slogan. Meta’s guidelines ban symbols such as ®, slogans, unnecessary punctuation, odd capitalisation, the word “official” on unofficial Pages, and names made of one general word or one place. Meta states no length limit on that page.

What Meta’s guidelines say

Meta’s Help Centre has a page of guidelines for Facebook Page names. It asks for names that are simple, specific and grammatically correct, and that accurately reflect the purpose of the Page. Its own examples of good names are Hungry Bear Coffee, Allstar Locksmith and Caring Hearts Daycare: a business name, plain capitals, nothing extra.

The rules behind that are short. A name may not contain abusive terms or ones that violate someone’s rights. It may not contain “official” unless the Page really is the official Page of a brand, place, organisation or public figure. It may not use symbols or unnecessary punctuation, may not be a description or slogan, and may not contain any variation of the names Facebook, Meta or Meta’s products.

Names that tend to be refused

Meta says an organisation name that includes a place is fine: its example is “New York City – Mayor’s Office”. The ban is on a name that is only a place, not on a place inside a real name. A bakery called Corner Bakery Leeds is a different case from a Page called Leeds.

Changing a Page name later

A name change is a request, not an instant edit: in Meta’s steps you update the name, choose Review change, enter your password and choose Request change. Only people with Facebook access to the Page can submit one. Someone with only task access cannot. Meta also lists a recent name change, by you or by someone else with Facebook access, as a reason you may not see the option to edit the name, and gives no time period, so plan the name before you build an audience around it.

Changing the name leaves the Page’s username alone. The two are separate settings. Meta lists two more reasons the option may be missing: there may be limits on your Page, and you can’t change the name of a regional Page that is part of a global Page.

Why the name matters outside Facebook

  • People see the Page name when you reply to them in Messenger, so a name they recognise makes an automated reply feel less like spam.
  • Facebook ads run as the Page, so the name appears on every ad you publish.
  • A name people already type is easier to find than a clever one.
  • If your Instagram handle and Page name differ, say so in the bio so people know they are the same business.

Tip: Pick the name before you spend on a logo or a banner. Redoing a cover photo is easy; waiting for a name change review while a campaign is live is not.

Questions people ask

How long can a Facebook Page name be?

Meta’s guidelines page for Page names gives no length limit, so there is no official figure to quote. Keep it to the name people actually say out loud, since long names are also cut short in many places on screen.

Can I put a slogan in my Facebook Page name?

No. Meta lists descriptions and slogans as not allowed, with the example “The Best Cafe – We serve the best coffee in town”. It says people who manage a Page can put that kind of line in the Page’s About section instead.

Can a Facebook Page name be one word?

Only if the word is not a general one. A name made of a single general word such as “Pizza” is not allowed, because Pages are meant to be run by the official representatives of what they are about. A brand’s own invented name is a different case.

Can I use the word “official” in my Page name?

Only if the Page is the official Page of a brand, place, organisation or public figure. Fan Pages, review Pages and Pages run by someone else about a brand cannot use it.

Who can change a Facebook Page name?

People with Facebook access to the Page can request a name change. People who only have task access can’t. If you or someone else with Facebook access changed the name recently, you may not see the option to edit it.
