The specs in Meta’s ads guide
These figures come from Meta’s ads guide pages for carousel ads in Facebook Feed. The awareness page and the traffic page, which we both read, list identical specs. Carousel ads on other placements, such as Instagram feed or Stories, have their own pages with their own numbers, so check the placement before reusing a file.
| Item | What Meta lists |
|---|---|
| Image | JPG or PNG, ratio 1:1, at least 1080 × 1080 px, 30 MB maximum |
| Video | MP4, MOV or GIF, 4 GB maximum, 1 second to 240 minutes |
| Cards | 2 to 10 in one carousel |
| Primary text | 80 characters recommended |
| Headline | 20 characters recommended |
| Description | 18 characters recommended |
| Landing page URL | Required |
| Ratio tolerance | 3% |
The text figures are listed under “text recommendations”, not as hard limits. Write to the numbers and keep the key words first, in case longer text is shortened on screen.
Why every card should be square
Meta lists a single ratio, 1:1, with a tolerance of 3%. In a carousel the cards sit side by side, and matching shapes make the swipe look tidy. Meta’s page does not say what happens to a photo in another shape, so assume it may be cropped or padded and check the preview in Ads Manager before you spend anything.
- Start every card at 1080 × 1080 or larger. Meta’s figure is a minimum, and a smaller file will look soft.
- Keep the subject in the middle. If one card is cropped differently from another, the middle is the part that survives.
- Use one visual style for all cards. A mix of photos and heavy text graphics looks uneven when people swipe.
- Don’t put key words close to the edges of a card, in case the edge is trimmed.
Tip: Tell one story across the cards: a step on each, a product on each, or one big picture split into pieces. Cards that could be in any order give people little reason to keep swiping.
Mixing images and video
Meta’s specs list both image and video file types for the same carousel, so cards can be photos or short clips. Video files can be MP4, MOV or GIF, up to 4 GB each. The duration range, 1 second to 240 minutes, is very wide: a card that plays for minutes defeats the point of a carousel. Short clips of a few seconds suit it better.
The file size limits are very generous compared with what you need. A 1080 × 1080 JPG is normally a small fraction of the 30 MB cap. If an image looks soft in an ad, check first that the source file is at least 1080 pixels square.
Setting it up without surprises
- Export every image as a 1080 × 1080 JPG or PNG.
- Write the headline within 20 characters and the description within 18, so neither is cut off.
- Keep primary text near 80 characters, with the point in the first words.
- Add a landing page URL, which Meta lists as required.
- Preview the ad on a phone-sized view in Ads Manager and swipe through all cards before you publish.
This page covers paid carousel ads. Organic carousel posts on a Page, and Instagram carousels, are governed by different rules and sizes, covered in the Facebook post and Instagram carousel guides.

Questions people ask
What size is a Facebook carousel ad image?
Meta’s ads guide recommends a 1:1 ratio and a resolution of at least 1080 × 1080 pixels, as a JPG or PNG up to 30 MB. Those figures are for carousel ads in Facebook Feed.
How many cards can a Facebook carousel ad have?
Between 2 and 10 cards. Meta lists that range in the technical requirements for carousel ads in Facebook Feed, for both the awareness and traffic objectives.
How long should carousel ad text be?
Meta recommends 80 characters for primary text, 20 for the headline and 18 for the description. These are recommendations rather than hard limits, and longer text may be cut off on screen.
Can a Facebook carousel ad use video?
Yes. Meta lists video file types of MP4, MOV or GIF, up to 4 GB, with a duration from 1 second to 240 minutes. For a swipeable format, short clips work better than long ones.
Are Instagram carousel ads the same size as Facebook ones?
Not necessarily. Meta publishes a separate specs page for each placement, so the Facebook Feed figures here should not be assumed for Instagram feed or Stories. Check the page for the placement you are buying.
