Instagram limits

Instagram caption length

An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters, the figure in Meta’s Instagram API reference and in every third-party guide we checked. Only the opening lines show in the feed before “more”. Treat the first line as the whole caption and the rest as optional reading.

The number and where it comes from

Meta’s reference for creating Instagram media says a caption can include hashtags and usernames and has a maximum of 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags. That page covers the Content Publishing API that scheduling tools use. Instagram’s Help Center articles on adding a caption before you share and on editing a caption you have already shared give no length at all, so for typing a caption in the app we rely on third-party guides, which agree on 2,200.

Meta does not say, in the pages we could read, what happens when a caption goes over. In the app, test it by pasting a long text. For a tool that publishes through the API, cut the text to length before sending rather than relying on it being trimmed.

How much of it people actually see

In the feed, a long caption is folded after its first lines and a “more” link appears. Sprout Social’s character limit guide puts the fold at 125 characters; Meta publishes no figure, and the real cut-off depends on the phone, the font size and where line breaks fall. Treat 125 as a rough guide.

  • Put the point of the post, the offer or the hook in the first line.
  • If a caption asks people to comment a word such as GUIDE, put that instruction before the fold, not at the end of a long story.
  • A caption that is a short sentence can sit entirely above the fold, with nothing for people to expand.
  • Line breaks count too. A blank line is a character, so a caption spaced out like a poem uses more of the 2,200 than it looks.

Hashtags: 30 on paper, five in Instagram’s Help Center

Meta’s API reference, last updated 28 September 2026 when we checked, still lists 30 hashtags per caption. Instagram’s Help Center article on hashtags says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. News reports from December 2025, such as Social Samosa’s of 19 December, say Instagram announced the limit of five on posts and Reels, rolled out gradually and aimed at spam. The two figures are shown side by side because Meta’s developer reference does not mention the cut.

What does that mean for you? Plan for five. A caption with five or fewer works under either rule, and nothing is lost if the API still allows more. The Help Center says hashtags can go in the caption or in comments, and that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video your comment won’t post, so count the tags in your comments too.

Tip: Hashtag counts and caption length are separate limits, so check both before you post.

Characters, emoji and tools that post for you

Meta’s documents say “characters” without defining them. Whether an emoji counts as one or two, or an accented letter as one or two, is not stated on the pages we read. A safe habit is to leave a margin: aim for 2,000 and you are unlikely to hit the cap when emoji count generously.

Scheduling tools use the API, so its rules apply to them. For a carousel, the caption belongs to the whole post: the reference says a caption is not supported on the individual images or videos inside it. Alt text is its own field, up to 1,000 characters for an image, so a long description does not use up caption space.

Questions people ask

How many characters can an Instagram caption have?

2,200, according to Meta’s Instagram API reference and the third-party guides we checked. Instagram’s Help Center articles on writing and editing a caption give no separate figure for typing in the app.

How much of an Instagram caption shows before “more”?

Sprout Social says about 125 characters. Meta does not publish a number, and the true fold depends on the device and the line breaks, so put the important sentence first.

Is the Instagram hashtag limit 30 or 5?

Instagram’s Help Center says up to 5 tags on a post. Meta’s API reference still lists 30 per caption, and news reports say Instagram announced the cap of five in December 2025 and rolled it out gradually. Plan for five and treat 30 as the old ceiling.

Do spaces and emoji count towards the 2,200?

Spaces and line breaks are characters, so they count. How emoji are counted is not documented in the Meta pages we read, so leave some room instead of aiming for exactly 2,200.

Is the limit the same for Reels and carousels?

Meta’s reference gives one caption limit for images, videos, Reels and carousels. In a carousel, the caption belongs to the whole post, not to each slide.
