A comment-to-DM offer asks people to comment one word on a post or Reel, then sends them something useful in a private message. These 53 ideas each pair a keyword with a specific offer, so you can pick one that fits what you already post.

Tips for using these ideas

  1. Pick a keyword people can spell on a phone: one word, no spaces, no symbols. Say it in the caption and on the video itself, in the same capitals every time, so nobody guesses.

  2. Make the offer match the post. Someone who watched a 20-second lifting clip will comment for a warm-up routine and ignore a discount on a course. Mismatched offers collect comments and few replies.

  3. Remember how the first message works. Instagram doesn’t allow links or buttons in the first DM to a commenter, so it’s plain text asking them to reply (“Reply YES and I’ll send it”). The link or card can follow once they answer.

  4. Meta allows one private reply per comment, and only within 7 days of it. If you promised the offer on a post that’s two weeks old, answer later commenters by hand.

  5. Track two numbers: comments per post and replies per ten comments. Many comments but few replies usually means the first message is too long or asks for too much.

  6. Test on one post before you put the keyword on every Reel. Check the whole path on your own phone, from comment to final message, and look at what a stranger would see.

Questions people ask

What is a comment-to-DM?

You ask people to comment a keyword on a post or Reel, and an automatic reply sends them a private message with what you promised. It saves you answering the same request by hand, and it lets people ask for the thing without writing an email address in public.

Does comment-to-DM work on personal Instagram accounts?

No. Instagram’s messaging tools for businesses are only open to professional accounts, meaning Business and Creator accounts. Switching a personal account to professional is free in Settings, though it changes some options such as audience insights.

Why can’t the first DM include a link?

Instagram doesn’t allow links or buttons in the first message to someone who commented. The common workaround is a plain-text opener that asks them to reply, then the link follows in your next message once they’ve answered.

Can I use comment-to-DM on a Live?

Comments made during a Live can only be answered while the Live is still running. After it ends the window closes, so plan to answer during the broadcast, and say the keyword out loud and on screen.

How many comments can be answered in an hour?

Instagram caps private replies to comments at 750 an hour for an account. Few posts reach that, but a Reel that suddenly takes off can, so a tool that stays safely below the cap is worth having.
