Wilted rose 🥀: really sad, or joking?

🥀 means something is over: a romance, a friendship, a good run. For years it was a sincere sign of heartbreak or grief, but since early 2025 younger users also tack it onto small letdowns as an overdramatic sigh, so sadness and irony now share one emoji.

🥀

Heartbreak, grief or something that’s over, and since 2025 also a mock-tragic sigh about small letdowns.

What 🥀 can mean

1. Heartbreak and loss

The original meaning. A rose given with love that has now died is an easy picture of a relationship that ended, a friendship that faded or a person who is missed. It closes breakup captions, sad-song edits and late-night Notes, usually beside 💔 or 🖤. Sent sincerely, it means “this hurts,” and it deserves a kind answer rather than a joke.

2. The ironic sigh of 2025

In February 2025, a TikTok joke announced that 💔 was getting “too mainstream” and that 🥀 was the new choice. It spread within days through ironic meme circles, poking fun at people who post heartbreak emojis with total sincerity. Since then 🥀 gets stuck on tiny disappointments for comic effect: a cancelled show, a sold-out flavour, a group chat that left you on read. Fittingly, the trend soon nominated 🪫 and 🍂 as the next “replacements.”

3. Fell off and faded

🥀 also marks decline. The team that won everything five years ago, the creator whose views dried up, the café that changed hands and lost its magic: each one “fell off 🥀.” From a fan it is fond nostalgia. From a rival it is a dig, and the comments usually make clear which.

4. Mourning and dark aesthetics

Away from the jokes, 🥀 still appears on memorial posts and on the anniversary of a death, like a flower left on a grave. It is also a fixture of goth, emo and dark-romance bios, usually beside 🖤, where it stands for a mood rather than any particular loss.

When someone sends you 🥀

What it means in a DM

Judge the size of the problem. “Exam results tomorrow 🥀” or “they were out of croissants 🥀” is theatre, so play along or send one back. After a breakup, a rejection or a death, it is real sadness with the words left out: ask what happened, or just say you are there. If you honestly can’t tell, “joking sad or actually sad?” is a fair question between friends.

Is it flirty?

Rarely. It is the emoji of romance ending, not starting. The closest it gets is a mock guilt-trip from someone who likes you: “you didn’t reply to my story 🥀” is teasing, and teasing can be a good sign. A lone 🥀 after you turn someone down is just them taking it on the chin.

Questions people ask

Why are people using 🥀 instead of 💔?

Because of a TikTok joke from February 2025. One post claimed 💔 had become too mainstream, others agreed with mock seriousness, and 🥀 became the knowing way to be “heartbroken” about almost anything. Part of the joke targets people who use heartbreak emojis earnestly, so 🥀 now often signals irony.

Is 🥀 a rose?

Unicode calls it wilted flower and doesn’t name the species, but most designs, Apple’s included, show a red rose with a drooping head and a fallen petal. That is why people call it the dead rose or wilted rose, and why it pairs so naturally with 🌹.

Is it okay to use 🥀 under a memorial post?

It has always been used that way, and many people still use it sincerely. The risk is that some younger readers now link it with ironic posts, so a grieving family member could read it as flippant. If in doubt, 🕊️, 🤍 or a few kind words can’t be misread.

When was 🥀 added?

In 2016, with Unicode 9.0, the same update that brought 🖤 black heart, 🤡 clown face and 🤞 crossed fingers. Unicode’s emoji list files it under Emoji 3.0.
