The mending heart and what it means
❤️🩹 means healing: a heart that was hurt and is getting better. People use it after a breakup, a loss or an illness, to wish someone a good recovery, and sometimes to patch things up after an argument. It is hopeful where 💔 is raw.
Updated 6 October 2026
Healing after hurt: getting over a breakup or a loss, recovering from illness or injury, or making peace after a fight.
What ❤️🩹 can mean
1. Getting over heartbreak
The most common use. Someone posts a sunset after a breakup, a first solo trip or a long caption about the year they rebuilt themselves, and ends it with ❤️🩹. It says “still sore, but better than I was.” The phrase “healing era” often sits beside it.
2. Recovery from illness or injury
Hospital updates, post-surgery selfies and comeback stories use it literally: the bandage is the point. Friends send it as a get-well-soon, fans post it when a player returns from a long injury, and it appears in posts about sobriety milestones and therapy, where recovery is the whole story.
3. Grief and anniversaries
On the anniversary of a death or a first birthday without someone, ❤️🩹 says the loss still hurts but life has carried on. It is gentler than 💔, which can feel stuck in the moment of the loss, so it also works as a reply under a memorial post when you don’t want to sound bleak.
4. Making up after a fight
Between friends or partners it can be a peace offering. “I’m sorry about last night ❤️🩹” means the sender wants to repair things, not pretend nothing happened. Sent back after an apology, it means “we’re okay, or getting there.”
When someone sends you ❤️🩹
What it means in a DM
Read it alongside whatever came just before. After you share bad news, it is sympathy with hope: “you will get through this.” After a fight, it is an olive branch, and the kind response is to take it, even if you still want to talk things through. From a friend who has had a rough patch, it can be a quiet update that they are doing better, so ask how they are.
Is it flirty?
Rarely. It is about repair, not attraction. The romantic exceptions are a couple patching things up, or someone new telling you they are finally ready to date again after a hard breakup. Even then it signals care and caution more than chemistry.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between ❤️🩹 and 💔?
💔 is the hurt itself: a breakup, bad news, a sad ending. ❤️🩹 is what comes after, when the heart is bandaged and on the mend. Sending ❤️🩹 to someone who is grieving says “I hope it gets easier” rather than “how awful.”
When was the mending heart added?
In Emoji 13.1, released in 2020, in the same update as ❤️🔥 heart on fire. It reached iPhones with iOS 14.5 in April 2021.
Why do I see a heart and a bandage side by side?
❤️🩹 is built from ❤️ and 🩹 joined by an invisible joining character. Phones and apps that don’t know the combined emoji show the two parts next to each other. The meaning is the same, and a software update usually fixes the display.
Is ❤️🩹 okay to send when someone dies?
Yes. It is gentle and hopeful, which suits the weeks and months after a loss. In the first days, a few kind words matter more than any emoji, and 🤍 or 🕊️ may feel quieter. Follow the family’s tone.
Can a business use ❤️🩹?
Carefully. It suits physiotherapy, health and therapy practices thanking patients, or a shop reopening after a fire or a flood. After a mistake of its own, a brand should apologise in words first; a bandaged heart on its own can look like it is asking for sympathy.
