What does the snowflake emoji ❄️ mean?

Most of the time ❄️ means exactly what it shows: snow, cold weather, winter and the run-up to Christmas. Two other readings are worth knowing. Calling a person a “snowflake” is an insult for someone thought to be easily offended, and in drug-dealing slang the snowflake can stand for cocaine.

❄️

Snow, cold weather and the winter holidays, mostly. Aimed at a person it can mean “oversensitive,” and in drug slang it can mean cocaine.

What ❄️ can mean

1. Snow, ice and winter weather

The literal use, and still the most common. First snow of the year, a frozen windscreen, a ski trip to Gulmarg or the Alps: ❄️ marks anything icy. Shops use it the same way for winter coats, frozen desserts and iced drinks. Hotels, bus operators and rental listings often put ❄️ next to “AC” to flag air conditioning, the same symbol many cars print on the A/C button.

2. Christmas and the festive season

From late November, ❄️ shows up in captions, bios and Story highlight covers as seasonal decoration, even where it never snows. Brands add it to winter sales and gift guides, usually in a row with 🎄 and ☃️. In December it says “it’s that time of year” far more often than it says anything about the weather.

3. Calling someone a “snowflake”

As an insult, “snowflake” means a person seen as fragile, easily offended or convinced they are uniquely special: snowflakes melt at the first bit of heat, and each one is supposedly one of a kind. It became a common political jab in the mid-2010s, aimed mostly at young people and liberals. A lone ❄️ in reply to someone’s complaint is usually this insult, not a weather report.

4. Code for cocaine

“Snow” has long been slang for cocaine, and the emoji carries it over. The US Drug Enforcement Administration’s emoji guide for parents lists the snowflake, the snowman and the 8 ball 🎱 as cocaine code. The same guide says an emoji on its own proves nothing; it matters only alongside other warning signs, such as sudden changes in behaviour, appearance or money.

When someone sends you ❄️

What it means in a DM

Usually small talk: snow where they are, a holiday greeting, a photo from the mountains. Ask how cold it is, or send a festive emoji back. Two exceptions. If it lands straight after you complained about something, they may be calling you a snowflake, so read their tone before you answer. From an unknown account offering prices or delivery, it can be a drug sales pitch: don’t reply, and report the account.

Is it flirty?

Almost never. The snowflake carries no romance of its own, so any flirting sits in the words around it, as in “snowed in, wish you were here ❄️.” Sent with ❤️ or 😘 in December, it is far more likely to be a festive greeting than a hint.

Questions people ask

Is ❄️ an insult?

Only when it is aimed at a person. Under a weather post or a Christmas photo it is decoration. Sent in reply to someone’s opinion or complaint, it calls them a “snowflake”: fragile and easily offended. That use is meant to belittle, and in a heated thread it rarely moves the conversation anywhere.

Should parents worry about ❄️ in a child’s messages?

Not on its own. Countless winter and Christmas posts use it innocently, and the DEA guide that lists it as cocaine code also says an emoji by itself is not evidence. Look closer only if it comes with other signs, such as talk of prices and meeting up, or sudden changes in mood, appearance or spending, and start with a calm conversation.

What is the difference between ❄️, ☃️ and ⛄?

❄️ is snow itself. ☃️ snowman shows a snowman with snow falling around it, and ⛄ snowman without snow is the same figure against a clear background. All three say winter. People reach for the snowmen in playful, Christmassy posts and use ❄️ for anything cold, from weather warnings to frozen food.

Why does ❄️ sometimes show up black and white?

The snowflake is older than emoji, and by default it is drawn as a plain text symbol. Phones add an invisible variation selector (U+FE0F) to ask for the colour version. If that gets lost, for example when text is copied between apps, some devices show a small black ❄ instead. Picking it again from the emoji keyboard fixes it.

How old is the ❄️ emoji?

As an emoji it dates from 2010, when Unicode took in the emoji used on Japanese phones, and Unicode’s list gives it version 0.6, the label for that first set. The character is older still: it sits in Unicode’s Dingbats block, which goes back to the early 1990s.
