Emoji meaning
What does the thinking face 🤔 really mean?
🤔 is the emoji version of “hmm.” Sometimes the sender is honestly weighing something up, like which flight to book. Just as often it is sceptical: they doubt what they just read, or they are hinting that something doesn’t add up.

“Hmm”: weighing something up, doubting a claim, or hinting that something doesn’t add up. The raised eyebrow often makes it sceptical.
What 🤔 can mean
1. Honestly thinking it over
The plain use. Someone is choosing between options or turning an idea over: “Window or aisle for a ten-hour flight 🤔.” As a reply it means “let me think,” so a 🤔 after you suggest a plan isn’t a no. It is a maybe that needs a detail or two, such as the price, the time or who else is coming.
2. Doubt and suspicion
Most designs give the face one raised eyebrow, and that eyebrow makes 🤔 sceptical. “He’s ‘working late’ again 🤔” is not a question about his job. Under a post making a big claim, such as a miracle tea or a giveaway that seems too generous, a row of 🤔 replies means the audience isn’t buying it.
3. “Makes you think” sarcasm
After a pointed comparison, 🤔 becomes a deadpan joke: “The bus fare went up again and the bus still didn’t come 🤔.” The sender already knows the answer and wants you to notice it. Meme culture took this further: on Discord and Reddit, warped and squashed edits of the face, nicknamed “thonk,” became a running joke of their own.
4. Teasers, polls and quiet questions
Creators and shops use 🤔 to start guessing games (“Something new drops Friday. Any guesses? 🤔”) and to open a poll or a question sticker on a Story. Followers use it the other way round, as a polite “wait, how does this work?” in the comments.
When someone sends you 🤔
What it means in a DM
Look at what it follows. After your question or invitation, it means they are thinking, and one more detail may help them decide. After something you claimed, it means “really?”: they want proof or a better story. As a reaction to your Story, it is a cue to fill them in on what is going on. A short, specific answer works better than a defensive one.
Is it flirty?
Now and then, as playful doubt. “You? Cooking for me? 🤔” teases without saying no, and it invites you to prove them wrong. That is banter, and the rest of the chat decides whether it is flirting. On its own, 🤔 is curious or sceptical, not romantic.

Questions people ask
Is 🤔 rude?
It can be. In reply to someone’s good news, a confession or an apology, it can read as “I don’t believe you.” Between friends, about a plan or a puzzle, it is harmless. If you mean you are considering something, add a few words, such as “🤔 let me check my week,” so it can’t be mistaken for doubt.
What is the difference between 🤔, 🤨 and 🧐?
🤔 is thinking, often with a hint of doubt. 🤨 face with raised eyebrow drops the thinking and keeps the suspicion: it says “excuse me?” 🧐 face with monocle means looking closely at something, or playing posh. Both arrived with Emoji 5.0 in 2017, two years after 🤔.
What does 🤔 mean from a customer?
Often a question they haven’t typed yet. Under a product post it tends to mean “is it worth it?” or “how does this work?”, and next to a price it often means “that’s more than I expected.” Answer the likely question (price, sizes, delivery time) rather than just thanking them, or ask what they would like to know.
When was 🤔 added?
Thinking face joined Unicode in version 8.0 in 2015, in the same batch as 🙄 face with rolling eyes, 🙃 upside-down face and 🤓 nerd face. Unicode lists it as an Emoji 1.0 character, and it has been on every major platform for years.
