Why people send a black heart
π€ is love in a darker shade. People send it as sympathy after a death, to match a goth, emo or all-black style, to tag dark humour, and in support of Black communities. It almost never means someone is heartless.
Updated 6 October 2026
Love with a darker edge: sympathy and mourning, goth or all-black style, dark humour, or solidarity with Black communities.
What π€ can mean
1. Sympathy and mourning
Black is the colour of mourning in much of the world, and π€ is a common comment under death announcements, memorial posts and news of a tragedy. It says βIβm sorryβ without needing words. Where white is the traditional mourning colour, as in Hindu and Chinese custom, π€ can feel more natural.
2. Style and aesthetic
In bios and captions π€ is often about looks: all-black outfits, tattoos, goth and emo fashion, metal and rock, moody monochrome feeds. Used this way it simply means love, in a colour that matches the rest of the profile. Fans of black-shirted sides use it too, from New Zealandβs All Blacks to black-and-white football clubs, whose supporters usually add π€.
3. Love with an edge, and dark humour
Some people prefer π€ to β€οΈ because it feels less sugary: βlove you, idiot π€.β It also tags dark jokes, true crime, horror and the villains people secretly root for, where it means βI love this, and yes, I know itβs grim.β
4. Black pride and solidarity
π€ often appears with βπΏ or βπΎ in posts about Black History Month (February in the US and Canada, October in the UK), Black-owned businesses and racial justice. It carries the same message as the plain black squares that filled Instagram feeds on Blackout Tuesday, 2 June 2020.
When someone sends you π€
What it means in a DM
Either affection with a cooler finish or sympathy, and the message before it tells you which. From a friend who lives in black clothes, π€ is just their heart. After you share bad news, it means βIβm sorry, Iβm here.β From someone you are seeing, it can be a moodier way to say βlove you.β Answer the feeling, not the colour.
Is it flirty?
It can be. Some couples and crushes use π€ because β€οΈ feels too soft or too obvious, especially people into goth or alternative style. It is an understated signal rather than a loud one. Under a memorial post or a sad update, it is never flirty.

Questions people ask
Does π€ mean someone is heartless or evil?
Hardly ever. βBlack-heartedβ means cruel, but people donβt use the emoji that way. Even in villain fan posts, π€ is affection for something dark, not a cold heart. Someone who is genuinely hostile will make that clear in words.
Is π€ a good emoji for condolences?
In most Western settings, yes: it is common and respectful, often with ποΈ or a short message. For a family that marks mourning in white, π€ may suit better. For any close loss, a sentence of your own matters far more than the colour of the heart.
Why is β€οΈ called a black heart in Unicode?
Older Unicode names use βblackβ to mean filled in and βwhiteβ to mean outlined. So β€οΈ is officially HEAVY BLACK HEART and β₯οΈ is BLACK HEART SUIT, even though both appear red on phones. The heart that actually looks black, π€, only arrived in 2016.
Can a brand use π€?
Yes. It suits fashion labels, tattoo studios, coffee roasters and any brand with a black logo or a minimal look. Take care on days of mourning and after a tragedy, when a π€ on a promotional post can look like using the moment to sell.
