Cupid’s arrow 💘: what the emoji means

💘 is a heart pierced by Cupid’s arrow, and it means being struck by love: a new crush, love at first sight, or the giddy start of something. It is busiest around Valentine’s Day, and from the right person it is one of the clearer romantic hints among the hearts.

What 💘 can mean

1. Falling for someone

In Roman myth, Cupid’s arrows made people fall in love, and 💘 is that moment in one picture. People use it for a new crush, a first date that went well or someone who has suddenly taken over their thoughts. Sent straight to a person, it says “you got me.”

2. Love at first sight, for anything

It works for things too. A dress in a shop window, a puppy at the shelter, a cottage listing, a band’s new single: “instantly obsessed 💘” means it was love at first sight. In this sense it is lighthearted and has nothing to do with anyone’s love life.

3. Valentine’s season

From early February, 💘 fills captions, gift guides and shop posts. In India it covers the whole Valentine’s week, from Rose Day on 7 February through Propose, Chocolate, Teddy, Promise, Hug and Kiss Day to Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Florists, bakeries and jewellers put it on offers, and friends use it for Galentine’s brunches on the 13th.

When someone sends you 💘

What it means in a DM

From someone you have been talking to, 💘 is a fairly clear sign of romantic interest, more pointed than 💕 or 💖. Sent after a date, it means they enjoyed it and want more. From a friend in February, it may just be a playful Valentine’s greeting. If you feel the same, send one back or suggest a plan; if not, a kind, friendly reply avoids leading them on.

Is it flirty?

Yes, more than most hearts. The arrow is about falling for someone, so outside friendly Valentine’s jokes and shopping posts, 💘 is a hint. It isn’t sexual: it is the crush heart, the one for butterflies and first dates.

Questions people ask

How is 💘 different from 💝?

💘 heart with arrow is about falling in love, Cupid style. 💝 heart with ribbon is a heart wrapped like a present: love as a gift, common on Valentine’s presents, birthdays and thank-yous. One says “I’ve fallen for you,” the other “this is for you.”

Is 💘 too much for a first message?

It can be. As an opening line to someone you don’t know, it comes across as forward. After a few good conversations or a first date, it is a sweet way to show interest. Between friends in February it is just Valentine’s cheer.

Who is the archer behind 💘?

Cupid, the Roman god of desire, known as Eros in Greek myth and usually drawn as a winged child with a bow. Anyone hit by one of his arrows was said to fall in love. Victorian valentines were full of him, which is why an arrow through a heart reads as romance at a glance.

What does 💘 mean on a Story or in a bio?

On a Story it usually marks a date, an anniversary or a Valentine’s post. In a bio it can mean the person is in love, often next to their partner’s @, or simply likes the romantic look. In February plenty of shops add it to their bio for a sale.
