What a red heart really means
❤️ is the standard love heart and one of the most used emoji in the world. It can mean “I love you,” but just as often it means thanks, support or “I liked this.” Who sends it, and where, decides how much weight it carries.
Updated 6 October 2026
Love and deep affection, but also thanks, support and a simple “liked”: how much it means depends on who sends it.
What ❤️ can mean
1. Romantic love
The original job. Between partners, ❤️ is the everyday “I love you”: at the end of a call, under a couple photo, on an anniversary post. It is the heart people choose when they mean it most, which is why a first ❤️ from someone you are dating can feel like a step forward.
2. Family and old friends
Parents, siblings and lifelong friends send ❤️ with no romance at all: birthday wishes, “proud of you,” goodnight in the family group. For many parents and grandparents it is simply the heart, used for everything from graduation photos to pictures of lunch.
3. Liked, seen, thank you
On Instagram a heart is the like button, and double-tapping a message in DMs adds a ❤️ reaction by default. So a ❤️ on your message often means no more than “seen it, liked it.” Facebook’s Love reaction does a similar job under posts. Under a comment it is thanks; from a brand replying to customers, it is good manners.
4. Support and pride
After bad news, a loss or a brave post, ❤️ says “I’m with you” when words feel too small. It also turns up as pride for red teams and red flags: Liverpool and Manchester United fans both use it, though rarely for each other.
When someone sends you ❤️
What it means in a DM
It depends on the sender. From a partner, it is love. From family or a close friend, it is affection, often to close the chat. From a crush or a new match, ❤️ is warmer than most hearts and may be a hint, especially if they don’t usually send it. As a reaction on your message, it may just mean they read it and liked it. Sending one back is never wrong; after something serious, add words.
Is it flirty?
Often, but not always. ❤️ is the most romantic heart, so from someone you are getting to know it can be a real signal, especially after a long chat or a photo of you. The catch: some people send ❤️ to everyone, and a double-tap in DMs is just a like. Watch whether they send it unprompted, and whether their words match.

Questions people ask
Is ❤️ always romantic?
No. It is the most romantic of the hearts, but most of the ❤️ sent every day go to friends, family and posts people enjoyed. A partner’s ❤️ means love, a grandparent’s ❤️ means love of another kind, and a ❤️ reaction from a coworker means “nice.”
Is ❤️ the most used emoji?
Nearly. In the Unicode Consortium’s data on emoji use in 2021, ❤️ came second, behind only 😂. It is by far the most used heart, which is also why it carries less weight from people who send it constantly.
Why does ❤️ sometimes look like a small black heart?
The character is older than emoji. Its official Unicode name, from the early 1990s, is HEAVY BLACK HEART, where “black” means filled in, not the colour. Phones draw it as a red emoji when an invisible variation selector (U+FE0F) follows it. Without that, some apps and fonts fall back to a plain text heart: ❤.
What does ❤️ mean next to a name on Snapchat?
It is one of Snapchat’s friend emojis, added by the app rather than sent by the person. A red heart there means you have been each other’s #1 Best Friend for two weeks in a row. Friend emojis shift as the way you both use Snapchat changes.
Someone reacted ❤️ to my message. Should I reply?
Only if there is more to say. A ❤️ reaction often closes a chat the way “thanks” or “sounds good” would. If you asked a question and got only a heart, it is fine to follow up: they may have read it on the go and meant to answer later.
