Peeking through the fingers: what 🫣 means
🫣 is a face hiding behind its hand, with one eye peeking between the fingers. It means “I can’t look, but I’m looking anyway”: a scary scene, an awkward moment, results you’re dreading, or nerves after saying something bold. Curiosity beats embarrassment, which is what sets it apart from 🙈.
Updated 6 October 2026
Too scared, shy or embarrassed to look, but peeking anyway: tense scenes, awkward moments, dreaded results or a bold message just sent.
What 🫣 can mean
1. Can’t watch, can’t look away
The core meaning, straight from how people watch horror films. A penalty shoot-out, a jump scare, a friend’s first stand-up set, a cooking video where the knife gets close to a thumb: 🫣 is half hiding and fully watching. It suits suspense more than real fear, and the moment usually turns out fine.
2. Bracing for bad news
People send it before checking something they suspect will hurt: the bank balance after a holiday, the bathroom scale in January, exam marks, the first reviews of a new menu. “Opening my card statement 🫣” means they are reading the numbers through their fingers.
3. Shy after being bold
After a confession, a cheeky compliment or a selfie posted to the main feed instead of Close Friends, 🫣 says “I can’t believe I just did that.” It is bashful rather than sorry, and often a quiet request for reassurance.
4. Secondhand embarrassment
Watching someone else’s cringe moment gets a 🫣 too: an ex’s cryptic Story, an uncle’s dance-floor moves, a reply-all at work. It means “I shouldn’t be seeing this,” with a hint of enjoying it. It is gentler than 💀, which laughs out loud.
When someone sends you 🫣
What it means in a DM
It depends on what came just before. After their own message, 🫣 means they are nervous about how you will take it, whether it was a confession, a risky joke or a photo, and a quick, warm answer helps. After something you sent, they are reacting to suspense or awkwardness, as in “oh no, go on.” Before news, it is a drumroll: something they are nervous to share is coming.
Is it flirty?
Sometimes. It is a shy emoji, so it often follows a bold line: “you looked really good today 🫣.” That is someone nervous about having said it, and a kind reply takes the pressure off. With no compliment around it, 🫣 is usually about suspense or awkwardness, not attraction.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between 🫣 and 🙈?
🙈 see-no-evil monkey covers both eyes, so it says “I can’t look” or “oops,” usually in a cute, embarrassed way. 🫣 leaves one eye uncovered, which adds curiosity: you are hiding, but still watching. For a horror trailer or a big reveal, 🫣 fits better. For blushing at a compliment, either works.
What about 🫢 and 🤭?
Both cover the mouth, not the eyes. 🫢, with its eyes wide open, is a gasp: shock at news or gossip. 🤭 is a giggle being hidden, or a cheeky “oops.” 🫣 is about not wanting to see something; 🫢 is about not believing what you just heard.
When did 🫣 come out?
It belongs to Emoji 14.0, the 2021 release that also gave us 🫠 melting face and 🫢. Apple added it to iPhones in iOS 15.4, in March 2022. Phones without that update show a blank box in its place.
Is 🫣 scared or embarrassed?
Either, and the situation decides. Under a horror trailer it is fear you enjoy. After a message someone wishes they could unsend, it is embarrassment. Before results, it is dread. What links them is the half-covered face: something is hard to look at, and the sender is looking anyway.
Can brands use 🫣?
It works for playful teasers: a sneak peek of a launch, a price reveal or the “before” photo in a makeover post. Keep it away from apologies and mistakes, where it can look like the brand is giggling about a real problem.
