Hot face 🥵: heat, spice or a compliment?
🥵 is a red face with sweat on its brow and its tongue hanging out, overheating. It means too hot: a heatwave, a hard workout, a sauna or a curry that fought back. Under someone’s photo it usually means something else: they look hot, and the commenter is visibly flustered.
Updated 6 October 2026
Overheated: a heatwave, a hard workout or very spicy food, or a flustered reaction to someone who looks very attractive.
What 🥵 can mean
1. Too hot to function
The literal meaning: a heatwave afternoon, a bus with no air conditioning, a kitchen in August, the top bench of a sauna. It is sweatier and more desperate than ☀️, the face of someone who has given up on looking presentable until the sun goes down.
2. Spicy food
Food lovers use 🥵 for heat that bites back: a chilli challenge, a phaal from the local curry house, ghost-pepper crisps, a vindaloo ordered out of pride. With 🌶️ beside it, the post is almost certainly about food, and the verdict is “painful but worth it.”
3. Worked hard, sweating hard
After leg day, a 10k, a hot yoga class or a dance rehearsal, 🥵 means wrung out and dripping. Under a gym Reel it can also mean “that workout looks brutal,” which is admiration, not a complaint.
4. You look hot
Under a selfie or a fan edit, 🥵 means the commenter finds the person attractive enough to feel flushed. It is a thirst comment: bolder than 😍 and more physical. Its panting face also turns up in sexual flirting, which is why a 🥵 from a stranger can feel forward rather than flattering.
When someone sends you 🥵
What it means in a DM
From a friend talking about the weather, food or the gym, it is just heat. As a reaction to a photo you sent, it is a compliment on your looks: playful from a friend, openly interested from a crush. If someone you barely know answers an ordinary picture with 🥵, it is forward, and you can laugh it off, change the subject or not reply at all.
Is it flirty?
Often. Outside talk about weather, food or exercise, 🥵 is one of the clearest ways to say “you’re hot” without words. Between two people already flirting it is fun and bold. From a stranger it can be too much, and you don’t owe it a warm reply. With 💦 or 😏 next to it, the message is suggestive rather than subtle.

Questions people ask
Is 🥵 sexual?
It can be, but not by default. In posts about weather, spicy food and workouts it is innocent. Under a photo it means “you look hot,” a compliment about attraction. Its sweaty, panting look also gets used in explicit sexting, especially next to 💦, so the conversation around it decides.
What is the difference between 🥵 and 😍?
😍 heart eyes is admiration: you love what you see, whether that is a puppy, a cake or a person. 🥵 is heat: you find someone physically attractive. Use 😍 on a friend’s wedding photo and save 🥵 for people who will enjoy that kind of compliment.
Is it okay to comment 🥵 on someone’s photo?
On a close friend’s or a partner’s photo, usually yes. On a stranger’s it is a thirst comment, and some people find that uncomfortable, especially in a public thread. If you don’t know them, a compliment in words, such as “great photo,” is the safer choice.
When was 🥵 added?
Hot face arrived in Emoji 11.0 in 2018, in the same set as 🥶 cold face. Most designs show a red face, beads of sweat and a tongue hanging out, like a dog panting in the sun.
Can a business use 🥵?
Yes, literally. Hot sauce brands, curry houses, saunas, gyms and summer sales all use it naturally. Be careful with it in replies, though: from a brand account, 🥵 under a customer’s selfie reads as flirting.
