What the woozy face 🥴 means

🥴 is a flushed face with uneven eyes and a wobbly mouth, the look of someone who isn’t quite steady. It mostly means tipsy, dizzy, unwell or wiped out. People also use it when someone attractive leaves them dazed, and as a queasy reaction to anything that seems a bit off.

🥴

Not quite steady: tipsy, dizzy, ill or sleep-deprived, dazed by someone attractive, or queasy about something that seems off.

What 🥴 can mean

1. Tipsy or drunk

The classic use. One glass too many at a wedding, the walk home from a birthday, the group selfie nobody will ever post: 🥴 is the face of someone pleasantly unsteady. It is a joke about being tipsy rather than a confession, and it pairs with 🍷, 🍺 or 🥂.

2. Dizzy, ill or wiped out

Waking up from an anaesthetic, a fever, a hangover, a night of four hours’ sleep, the third hour of a winding car journey: 🥴 covers any state where the room feels slightly tilted. Students use it in exam season to mean their brain has turned to mush.

3. Dazed by someone

Under a photo of someone attractive, 🥴 means “I’m weak,” a goofy, dizzy kind of crush. It is less heated than 🥵 and sillier than 😍, as if the person looking has lost the ability to form sentences.

4. That looks off

In comment threads it can also mean “yikes”: a strange food combination, a cringeworthy opening line, a questionable outfit. Here the face isn’t drunk but queasy, the reaction of someone who can’t quite believe what they are seeing.

What it means in a DM

Check the time and the topic. Late on a Friday after a night out, it means they are tipsy, so keep it light and make sure they get home safely. Next to “so tired” or “I think I’m coming down with something,” it is a sickly face, and sympathy helps. In reply to your selfie it is a goofy compliment; in reply to your plan, it may mean they think the plan is a bit off.

Is it flirty?

Sometimes. 🥴 under a photo or after a compliment can mean the sender is weak at the knees, in a goofy rather than steamy way, which makes it a mild, playful flirt. If they are clearly out drinking, it may just be the drinks talking, so save serious conversations for the next day.

Questions people ask

Does 🥴 always mean drunk?

No. Drunk or tipsy is the best-known reading, but plenty of people use it for being dizzy, ill, sleep-deprived or simply overwhelmed. A message at 8am about an exam has nothing to do with drinking. Check the time, the topic and the words around it.

What is the difference between 🥴, 😵‍💫 and 🤪?

😵‍💫 face with spiral eyes is spinning dizziness, confusion or feeling hypnotised, and it arrived later, in Emoji 13.1 in 2020. 🤪 zany face is wild, silly energy on purpose. 🥴 sits between them: unsteady and a bit out of it, whether from drinks, illness or a crush.

Is 🥴 an insult?

Rarely, but it can sting. In reply to someone’s cooking, outfit or idea, it means “that looks wrong,” which is teasing between friends and rude from a stranger. Aimed at yourself, as in “me after one cocktail 🥴,” it is just self-mockery.

When did 🥴 come out?

Woozy face was added in Emoji 11.0 in 2018, in the same release as 🥶 cold face, 🥵 hot face and 🥺 pleading face. Most designs give it flushed cheeks, one eye larger than the other and a wavy mouth.

Should I worry if a friend sends 🥴 late at night?

Usually it is a joke about a fun evening. If they seem very drunk, are alone, or don’t know how they are getting home, check in: offer to call, help book a ride, or stay on the phone until they are back. Jokes can wait until the morning.
