What the ghost emoji means in DMs and bios
👻 is a cartoon ghost, and it is more playful than scary. People use it for Halloween and spooky stories, for “boo” jokes, to point to their Snapchat (the app’s logo is a ghost), and for ghosting: going silent on someone without a word.
Updated 6 October 2026
Spooky fun, a playful “boo,” a Snapchat handle, or a nod to ghosting: vanishing from a chat or a date without explanation.
What 👻 can mean
1. Spooky, but cute
Every October the ghost joins 🎃 and 🦇 in costume photos, haunted-house trips, horror-film nights and pumpkin-patch captions. Most designs are friendly rather than frightening (Apple’s ghost pokes its tongue out), so it suits family posts and shop windows as well as horror fans. Outside Halloween it covers anything eerie: a creaky old house, a ghost tour, a story that gave someone chills.
2. Ghosting
To ghost someone is to stop replying with no goodbye and no reason, usually after a few dates or weeks of chatting. 👻 is the shorthand: “matched, talked for a month, then 👻.” Zombieing is the sequel, when the same person reappears months later with “hey stranger” as if nothing happened. Employers ghost job applicants too, and party guests ghost their hosts by slipping out without a goodbye.
3. Snapchat
Snapchat’s logo is a white ghost on a yellow square, so 👻 in an Instagram bio usually means “here’s my Snapchat,” followed by a username. The ghost turns up inside the app too: Ghost Mode on Snap Map hides your location from friends.
4. “Boo” and lurking
A ghost says “boo,” and boo is also a pet name, so couples use 👻 for the pun: “me and my boo 👻.” It can also be a cheeky “surprise, it’s me” from someone who has been quiet, or an admission of lurking: reading a group chat or a comment thread without ever posting.
When someone sends you 👻
What it means in a DM
It depends on who has been quiet. From someone who vanished for weeks, a lone 👻 is often a self-aware “sorry I disappeared,” and whether you answer is up to you. In a busy group chat it can mean “I’m off.” Around October it is usually Halloween plans. If it arrives with a username, they are inviting you to add them on Snapchat.
Is it flirty?
Rarely, unless it is the “boo” pun, which is sweet rather than bold. The ghost is better known for the opposite of flirting. A 👻 from someone who went silent and then resurfaced may be testing whether you are still interested, so reply only if you are.

Questions people ask
Is being left on “Seen” the same as being ghosted?
Not on its own. One unanswered message can mean they are busy, forgot or are still thinking of a reply. Ghosting is a pattern: days or weeks of silence after real back-and-forth, with follow-ups ignored too. If they keep watching your Stories while never answering, that has its own name: orbiting.
What are ghost followers on Instagram?
Accounts that follow you but never like, comment or watch anything. Many are abandoned or fake. Their main effect is on your engagement rate, which is usually worked out against your follower count, so lots of silent followers make it look lower. Apps that promise to remove them in bulk often ask for your password, which puts your account at risk.
What does 👻 mean in someone’s bio?
Almost always a Snapchat username, written right after the ghost. With no username next to it, it is more likely a love of Halloween and horror, or a joke that they rarely post.
Should I send 👻 to someone who ghosted me?
It can work as a light nudge (“👻?”) that shows you noticed without sounding hurt. If you want a real answer, a plain question works better. And if they still don’t reply, that is the answer, so there is no need to send another.
Does 👻 mean laughing, like 💀?
Not usually. 💀 is the “I’m dead, that’s too funny” emoji, and 👻 doesn’t carry that meaning. You will see the two side by side in Halloween posts, but as a reaction to a joke, the skull is the one people send.
