An eye roll: βugh,β βseriously?β or βyouβre so annoying (and I love you).β Playful between friends, rude to strangers.
What π can mean
1. Fed up
The plain meaning. Late trains, reply-all emails, a sibling borrowing your charger again: π sums up the sigh. It is usually mild irritation at a situation rather than anger at a person.
2. Sarcasm
Placed after something said with a straight face, it flips the meaning: βoh great, another app update πβ means the opposite of great. It does the job of the sarcastic tone of voice that text canβt carry.
3. Teasing someone you like
Friends and couples use π for mock annoyance: after a terrible pun, a humblebrag or an over-the-top compliment (βstop it πβ€οΈβ). Here the eye roll is close to a laugh, and a heart or π beside it confirms it.
4. Dismissing someone
In arguments and comment fights, π says βIβm not even going to answer that.β It is one of the more provocative reactions you can leave, because it rejects the point without engaging with it. On a work message it can read as open contempt.
When someone sends you π
What it means in a DM
Look at what it is aimed at. If they are complaining about something else (a delay, their landlord, the weather), they want sympathy, so agree or commiserate. If it follows your joke or your brag, it is usually fond teasing; tease back. If it lands on a serious request or an apology, they are annoyed with you, and talking it through works better than another emoji.
Is it flirty?
Sometimes, in a teasing way. Banter between two people who like each other is full of mock annoyance, and βyouβre so annoying πβ after a cheesy line can be a smile in disguise. Without that warmth around it, π is not a flirt.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between π and π?
π unamused face is a flat, sideways stare: not impressed. π is a bigger reaction, eyes up to the ceiling at something tiresome or silly. π can feel sulky; π is more theatrical, which is why it suits teasing better.
When was the eye-roll emoji added?
It arrived in Unicode 8.0 in 2015, in the same batch as π€ thinking face and π upside-down face. Before that, people typed βrolls eyesβ or made do with π.
Is it rude to send π at work?
Usually, if it is aimed at a person or a request: it reads as contempt in a way βthatβs frustratingβ doesnβt. Sharing an eye roll about the printer with a colleague you joke with is a different thing.
Someone left π on my post. What does it mean?
Most often disagreement or βnot impressedβ with the caption, an ad or a claim. Sometimes it is a friend teasing you. From a stranger it is fine to ignore; replying to an eye roll rarely changes anyoneβs mind.
