What the dotted line face is saying
🫥 means “I’m fading out.” People send it when they feel invisible or left out, want the ground to swallow them, or have run out of social energy. It borrows a comic-book trick, where a character drawn in dotted lines is invisible or about to disappear.
Updated 6 October 2026
Feeling invisible, overlooked or ready to disappear, whether from awkwardness, a drained social battery or a numb, zoned-out day.
What 🫥 can mean
1. Overlooked and invisible
The core meaning. 🫥 is for being left out when nobody meant any harm: a group chat that planned the weekend without you, a meeting where your idea got credited to someone else, a family dinner where everyone talks over you. It is quieter than complaining, a shrugging “apparently I don’t exist.”
2. Wanting to vanish
Embarrassment, the 🫥 way. You held a door for someone so far away they had to jog to it, or said “you too” when the waiter told you to enjoy your meal. The dashed outline says “please let me disappear right now.” Unlike 💀, it isn’t laughing; it is shrinking.
3. Social battery at zero
Introverts use it for the moment a party, a long family visit or a day of calls has used them up: “still at the wedding, but spiritually I left at 9 🫥.” It can also announce a break, so “going 🫥 until exams are over” means they will be quiet online for a while.
4. Numb or zoned out
Some people use it for feeling flat or detached, as if watching their own day from a step away. In a joking tone that just means tired. When it comes with talk of feeling empty for weeks, it can be a real sign that someone is struggling, and a direct, kind check-in is worth sending.
When someone sends you 🫥
What it means in a DM
Read what came before it. After an awkward story, 🫥 means “I’m mortified,” and a bit of reassurance helps: “nobody noticed, I promise.” After you forgot to invite them or left them on read, it is a gentle “you overlooked me,” and an apology plus a real invitation fixes it. If it arrives with no context in a hard week, ask how they are doing.
Is it flirty?
Rarely. The closest it gets is shyness: someone sends a bold message, then follows it with 🫥 as if hiding behind a door. That is a nervous flirt, and a warm reply brings them back. Otherwise it is about feeling unseen, not romance.

Questions people ask
When did 🫥 come out?
It was added in Emoji 14.0 in 2021 and reached iPhones with iOS 15.4 in March 2022, with Android phones following during 2022. On an older phone that never got the update, it shows up as an empty box or a question mark, which loses the joke.
What is the difference between 🫥, 😶 and 😶🌫️?
😶 has no mouth, so it means speechless or keeping quiet. 😶🌫️ is a face in clouds: foggy, confused or spaced out. 🫥 is the whole face fading, so it is about feeling unseen or wanting to vanish rather than having nothing to say.
Does 🫥 mean ghosting?
Not quite. 👻 is the usual emoji for ghosting someone. 🫥 is more often about the sender feeling ignored, or announcing that they are about to go quiet for a while, which is the polite opposite of ghosting.
Should I worry if a friend keeps sending 🫥?
Usually it is just a mood: tired, awkward or overlooked. Pay attention if it comes with talk of feeling empty, numb or pointless for weeks. Then ask plainly how they are doing, and listen. If you think they may be in danger, help them reach local emergency services or a crisis line.
Is it rude to send 🫥?
No. It describes the sender, not the reader. The only sting is when it lands as “you forgot about me,” and then it is a fair, gentle nudge.
