What does the pleading face mean?

Puppy-dog eyes: that is the whole idea of 🥺. People send it to beg sweetly (“call me later? 🥺”), to say something touched them (“you remembered 🥺”), or to look shy. It is soft and affectionate, almost never angry, and it spread fast after its 2018 release.

🥺

Big glossy puppy eyes: a cute “please,” a moved “aww, that’s so sweet,” or shyness. Soft, warm and rarely serious.

What 🥺 can mean

1. Please, pretty please

The original idea: wide, watery eyes that are hard to say no to. “Can I borrow your hoodie 🥺” or “one more episode 🥺” asks for something while admitting the ask is a little cheeky. The more 🥺s, the more theatrical the begging.

2. So touched I could cry

Just as often, 🥺 means a moment got to someone: a friend remembered a birthday, a rescue dog found a home, a follower sent a kind message. Here it sits close to “aww” or “my heart.” Some people pick 🥹 for this instead, because its wobbly smile makes the happy tears clearer.

3. Shy or a little sad

Paired with 👉👈 it turns into nervous shyness. Alone after small bad news (“they cancelled the trip 🥺”) it reads as disappointed and wanting comfort, not devastated; for real heartbreak people reach for 😭 instead.

4. Too cute to handle

In fandom and pet accounts, 🥺 is the reaction to anything adorable: a puppy’s first bath, a baby goat in pyjamas, a handwritten note from a favourite singer to fans. It is a staple of “soft” captions, often surrounded by pastel hearts and sparkles.

When someone sends you 🥺

What it means in a DM

Usually a soft ask or a soft thank-you. If they want something (a call, a favour, a photo of your cat), the 🥺 is there so you feel charmed rather than pushed, and a plain yes or no is still fine. If it follows something you said, you made them feel something good; a heart or an “of course” is enough.

Is it flirty?

Often, in a gentle way. Between people who like each other, 🥺 asks for attention without sounding needy: “text me when you land 🥺.” Friends and family send it constantly too, so on its own it proves little. Look for it alongside compliments, quick replies and plans to meet.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between 🥺 and 🥹?

🥺 pleading face has huge shiny eyes and a small frown, so it leans toward asking or feeling small. 🥹 face holding back tears came later, in Emoji 14.0 in 2021, and its brave little smile makes it the clearer choice for proud or happy tears. Plenty of people still use 🥺 for both.

What does 🥺👉👈 mean?

Shyness. The two index fingers pointing at each other copy the nervous habit of fidgeting with your hands, so the pair means “I’m a bit embarrassed to ask, but…”. A small request or a confession usually follows, and the whole thing is meant to be cute.

How popular is the pleading face?

Very. It arrived in Emoji 11.0 in 2018, and in the Unicode Consortium’s 2021 report on how often emoji are used it had climbed to 14th place, up from 97th in the previous list.

Can 🥺 be a guilt trip?

Sometimes. “You didn’t save me any cake 🥺” is usually a joke, but a string of 🥺s after you have already said no can feel like pressure. Puppy eyes don’t change your answer: a kind “sorry, not this time” is fine.

Should a brand use 🥺?

Sparingly. Replying “you made our whole week 🥺” to a lovely review sounds warm and human. Using it to beg for follows or sales (“please buy 🥺”) tends to look desperate.
