What does the hand over mouth emoji mean?

Picture someone laughing behind their hand: that is 🤭 today. People send it for a cheeky giggle, a shy reaction to a compliment or an “oops” after saying too much. Until 2022, though, Apple drew it with open eyes, so it looked like a gasp, and some people still use it to mean “oh no.”

🤭

A giggle behind the hand: cheeky, coy or “oops, did I say that?” On older iPhones it looked like a gasp instead.

What 🤭 can mean

1. A cheeky giggle

The main meaning now. Something is funny in a slightly naughty or embarrassing way, and the hand hides the grin: juicy gossip, a joke at a friend’s expense, a confession that you finished their leftovers. Softer than 😂 and more mischievous, it is the feeling of laughing in class when you shouldn’t.

2. Shy and flattered

Paid a compliment, plenty of people answer “stop it 🤭” or send the emoji alone. Here it means bashful and pleased, the face you make while blushing. Its formal Unicode name, “smiling face with smiling eyes and hand covering mouth,” spells out how coy it was meant to be.

3. Oops, my bad

After a slip, 🤭 owns up and laughs at the same time: a message sent to the wrong chat, a like on a photo from four years ago, forgetting to mute on a work call. It admits the mistake without much real regret, which is why it works for small blunders and not for serious apologies.

4. Oh my (the older reading)

On iPhones before iOS 15.4, released in March 2022, 🤭 had plain open eyes and looked like someone gasping “oh my!” People who learned it then may still send it for surprise, concern or a sheepish sorry. Apple gave that wide-eyed design to a new emoji, 🫢, and redrew 🤭 as the giggle its name describes.

When someone sends you 🤭

What it means in a DM

Usually a giggle with a blush in it. Sent after your compliment, it means they are flattered. Sent after their own message, they have admitted something a little embarrassing and are laughing at themselves. If it follows bad news, it may be the older “oh no” reading, so check the words around it. Teasing back, or asking what’s so funny, keeps things light.

Is it flirty?

Often, in a mild way. 🤭 is a classic shy-flirt reaction: “you’re sweet 🤭” after a compliment tells you it landed. Friends use it just as much for gossip and mischief, so treat it as a warm sign rather than proof. Steady giggles at your messages plus quick replies are the better clue.

Questions people ask

Is 🤭 laughing or shocked?

Mostly laughing. The giggle is the intended meaning and the way current phones draw it. Because older iPhones showed a gasp, some people still use it for surprise, so if 🤭 follows sad or alarming news, read it as “oh no” rather than a laugh.

What is the difference between 🤭 and 🫢?

🫢 face with open eyes and hand over mouth joined in Emoji 14.0 in 2021 and is the gasp: shock, awe, “I can’t believe it.” 🤭 is the giggle. If you mean “wow” rather than “hehe,” 🫢 is the clearer choice, especially for friends on newer phones.

What is the difference between 🤭 and 🙈?

🙈 see-no-evil monkey covers its eyes: “I can’t look,” usually out of embarrassment. 🤭 covers its mouth and laughs. Someone who just sent a risky text might follow it with 🙈; a friend laughing at that text would send 🤭.

Can 🤭 be mean?

It can. After a sly dig, such as “some of us were on time 🤭,” the giggle is the shade: pretend innocence on top of a jab, as if the remark slipped out. Between friends that is teasing. In a public comment thread, aimed at a stranger, it comes across as smug.

Can a business use 🤭?

In a playful brand voice, yes: “we may have baked too many cookies 🤭,” or a reply to a compliment on a product. Keep it out of answers to complaints, where a giggle looks like laughing at the customer.
